Carseat in rental car?

Has anyone had to install their kids seat in a rental?  We're flying to Florida on Thursday and I'm taking our seat.  H installed it in our cars here and we had them checked at the hospital, so I've never done it.  Apparently the staff at the rental car place can't install it (liability, I guess?)

Is it easy to install?  How do I know it's safe?  I'm taking the manual with me.

In other news, I'm flying 4 hours with a 6 month old.  Whee!

I would take it out of your car at home and practice installing it.  Don't go on the trip w/o having done it at least once!

  • Yay, fun!

We flew from MI to FL w/ baby C at 4 months (and she had a horrible cold when we flew) and things went great.  I was nervous but it was very smooth.   We did get ear drops from our ped that help numb her ears a bit. We've used them on some flights, not on others. I just realized the other day that she's flown on 9 planes so far, clocked about 54 hours actually IN the air so far!  That's kind of nuts.

We used our car seat in FL w/o the base in the taxi and rental, and it was very easy.We have a Chicco KeyFit 30, and you just feed the strap through the grey things on the top. Directions are adhered right to the seat, so that was a bit reassuring when we were wondering if we did it correctly.

We also didn't take our base to Australia and used the car seat in cars for the 2 months there w/o the base and it was pretty easy.  I was glad to get back to the ease of clicking the seat in, but it wasn't like it was traumatic to use w/o.   We did check it over a million times or two the first time we used it w/o the base!

I really hope the flights go well for you! : )

  • We brought DSs seat and rented one for DD and it was no problem, but I've had to take their seats out a few times so I'm comfortable with it. I just followed the manual the first time I put it in.

I didn't have it checked or anything, I just felt it was safe and secure.

Yes.  Try it once or twice at home, it does make it easier as you're trying to haul luggage and figure stuff out.  We took a taxi to our hotel and it was a little harried doing it for the first time at the airport when you're trying to get the suitcases in the taxi and out of the queue before ppl get antsy about the standing zone.   It was fine, but practice would have been nice.

  • Do you think it's easier w/o the base?  I was going to take it, but if I don't need to, that would probably be great.

You only need to install the base once.  If you don't, you're going to have to secure the carseat every time you get in the car. I'd MUCH rather put the base in and not have to worry about it.

  • try putting it in and out w/o the base.

I think it's WAY easier to travel w/o.

  • When Adele was in the infant seat, we just took that with no base- traveling with the base would have been a pita imo.

A few months ago we took her convertible car seat. It wasn't a problem at all, they make them super easy to install now with the latch attachments.
