s/o living in a hotel

I didn't weigh in on the OP, but I do love how a nicely decorated hotel room feels (maybe it's the turn down service and knowing I don't have to make the bed in the  morning!Wink).  I am wanting to recreate that feeling in our MB when we redecorate. I also would like to do something similar in our guest room so that our guests feel pampered.  I think I will go with blue and brown in the guest room for the main colors, but other than that, I am not sure.   We will be upgrading to a king size bed in the MB when we do, which will help.  I am not sure what color palate to go with, but I am leaning toward purple and silver/gray.  I have a hard time finding bedding that I like, I guess you could say I am a little picky about my bedding.  The Hotel Collection at Macys has some nice options, but most of the ones I like are dry clean only and I am not sure I want to do that.  Also, the idea of white bedding scares me.  I am concerned about it looking dingy after a while, but should I be concerned about that or have you not found it to be a problem (I use Tide and Tide Stain release on my whites and they seem to look bright white)?  Anyone have any ideas or suggestions to inspire a luxurious hotel feel in our MB and guest room?

Re: s/o living in a hotel

  • I think the color pallete's you are looking for are very welcoming. There are several things I do to achieve this type of feeling in my master and guest bedroom.

     1. Small details, like a really plush pillow or duvet. I also put small things in my guest bedroom when I am expecting guests, like a water carafe filled with water and lemon slices and chocolates upon arrival, and a beautiful scented room spray, little things like that.

    2. Unclutter the space as much as possible. My master bedroom and guest bedroom/office are as uncluttered as possible. Unfortunately, I must multi-purpose my guest as an office, but I make sure to have all papers put away and basically, my desk serves as a writing desk for my guests while they are here.

    3. Lighting - I make sure to have soft lighting in the room, wall sconces or nighstand lamps. Great for reading and I always keep a light on, when Im expecting someone.

When I go to a hotel, I absolutely love the small details that make my stay enjoyable, not just the overall appearance. Whether it is champagne in an ice bucket or one of those towel pets on the bed, I try to mimic these details whenever possible.

  • I think one thing that makes the hotel look is doing all or mostly all solids.  Patterned bedding is so ridiculously difficult these days and I think that's why hotels originally went to solids - no good choices.

My master has white sheets, a taupe duvet cover and shams, and a taupe and white geometric patterned coverlet.  The duvet stays folded at the foot of the bed so that the coverlet's seen.

As for the whites, bleach.  It boggles my mind that the women on this board don't Clorox their whites [previous post a month or so ago].  It's been around for 99 years and nothing else works like it to get really clean, bright, and sanitized whites - Johnny Come Latelys like Oxi whatever can't compare.

I couldnt agree more. Solids, duvet at the foot of the bed, and bleach for white. :D

I recently bought a duvet cover from The Company Store that I'm loving and I think feels hotel-like.  It's washable and has a subtle pattern.

I think one good tip for using bleach is only use it on 100% cotton fabrics.  If there are man-made fibers in the fabric (e.g. polyester), bleach can turn them yellow.  At least that's what I found online after I experienced yellowing on some things.  It works well for me on 100% cotton though.

  • Thanks for the suggestions so far.  I have to admit, the first thing I usually notice is how the bed looks, so making it look fabulous is key!  juno, do you have the item number or name?  I am curious to see what you chose.

The one thing I am afraid of with bleach is damaging something that is not meant to be bleached on laundry day, whether a small amount gets spilled somewhere or accidentally some in the washer.  I have had that happen when I was using Oxi stuff to make my whites stay white. How do you avoid accidents when you use bleach?

I bought this one: http://www.thecompanystore.com/Bedspreads-Coverlets/quilts-bedspreads-coverlets,default,sc.html plus a down comforter (though we took the comforter out recently and we're just using the cover since it got warm).  The fabric has a really nice thickness and weight to it; I can't vouch for other things there, but I've been happy so far.  Restoration Hardware things also look and feel luxurious to me.  I always want to crawl into the beds in that store.

ETA: Weird, I must have copied the link wrong.  Trying again.  It's the Legends Castille Matelasse Collection.  Good luck finding something you like.

Which one did you get?  There are many on the page.  Thanks for the tip for RH.  I never look there, but will now.

You do have to be careful - no getting around that.  Try the splashless Clorox formula - it's thicker, kinda the viscosity of toilet bowl cleaner.

I didn't not know about that splashless formula.  Good to know.  That would certainly help cut down on accidents.  Thanks for the tip!Big Smile
