Cat peeing everywhere again (a bit long)

Hello Nesties.

My cat Violet has been peeing all over the house again, although this time seems different.  Previously, she had peed once and I took her to the vet, she had an antibiotic shot, and she quit peeing.

Now,  it's everywhere.  The basement carpet, the living room, the dining room, and now my bedroom. It seems to have been going on for what feels like two months, maybe more.  I took her to the vet three weeks ago, and the vet gave her another antibiotic shot.  The reason for this delay, is that the spots were so few and far between, most of them I never even noticed (the smell wasn't even getting my attention).  The few spots I did find, I chalked up to her being stressed from our foster cat, or that I had removed one of her litterboxes for a day while I cleaned it.  I kept making excuses for things I might have done to stress her out to cause the urinating, until three weeks ago.

Almost overnight,  she began urinating 4-5 times a day all over the house, despite there being no obvious stressers for her.  The foster cat was gone, the dogs were crated, but still she pees everywhere. The vet said it could be stress, which irritated me because I don't agree.  I said there are no stressers, but they said there is nothing else they can see wrong.  They gave her the same antibiotic shot, and told me to see if she improves over the next two weeks - well she hasn't.

I decided to try to "retrain" her on her litter box, so she's in our spare bathroom with her litter box, food, bed and goodies.  I put her on a 100% can food diet to see if that would help, too, versus the 50% she was on previously.  Last night I noticed she had a red sore to the left of her nose, where hair was missing.  I'm not sure if she scratched herself or what's going on, but I am taking her back to the vet.

So my question is, has anyone had anything similar happen as above?  Any idea what's up with the sore on her face?  I am thinking of doing bloodwork on her to see if something is going on there that they can find.  My poor kitty.  :(

  • I agree I'd take her back to the vet and run more tests.

How are you cleaning her messes?

    Is she spayed?

  • Have they run a urinalysis on her?  The frequency is what would concern me the most.  If a urinalysis doesn't show anything, I would probably do behavioral modification to reduce stress like feliway, a cat tree, rescue remedy.  If that doesn't help then I would probably ask about an ultrasound to see if she has stones, etc.

  • starlette, Yes, she's spayed.  I am using Nature's Miracle stain & odor remover, with the enzyme fighting bit.

Kellbell, the frequency is what's alarming to me too.  They have not done a urinalysis.  The last time she was there, they said her bladder was too small to get a sample from.  I just ordered more Feliway.  I haven't used any in a while, so hoping reintroducing it helps some of the behavior...

  • I agree with the pps. I'd probably explore the medical angle a little more, due to the suddenly increased frequency, before assuming it was 100% behavioral.

GL! I hope you get things figured out soon. I've been there and it's no fun, but your kitty is so lucky to have you looking out for her.

That gets a huge WTF from me.  Why would they prescribe meds when they don't know what the problem is.  Fill her litterbox with packing peanuts or rice, let her pee in it, pour the pee in a clean tupperware and bring it to the vet for them to run.

  • They say cats are very good at hiding stress, so don't rule that out. Who knows... maybe she still smells the foster cat and that's what stressing her, or something else.

Ditto PPs about a full work up at the vet.

We have been dealing with Lily and pee issues and it seems it is behavioral. We have her now locked in our bedroom, so that she is still with us at night. She is totally fine in there, no accidents, but when she got out a few days ago, she peed all over again. So back to the bedroom it is.

You want to change things, to help her, but you don't want to change too much or you'll stress her out even more. It's a hard balance to strike.

    Good luck!

  • Oh, and PS - it really bothers me that your vet just gave out antibiotic without any test results.

Lily had an infection earlier this year (we thought that was why she was peeing). Vet started her on an antibiotic, but a week later the culture came back and the infection was resistant to that antibiotic, so they had to switch it.

It very well could be just an infection for Violet, but they are treating the wrong kind.

  • Thanks - I think they decided to do the antibiotic shot because it had worked in the past, but I will make sure I get a full workup on her ASAP.

Thanks for the packing peanut advice, I'll have to go out and get some of those tomorrow.  Thanks everyone.  I have her out with us in the living room now, giving her some fresh air while supervising.

  • My cat is 6 and has the same problem, she has been on Prozac for 4 years for her anxiety it works. I tried everything naturally before giving in, but it works. White vinager works best to get the smell out of bedding.

     Good luck!
