My knees are wrecked from running right now

Or, "running" rather.

I have been doing the C25K. I was feeling good Saturday so I pushed it in longer intervals/shorter recoveries.

My knees have been killing me since, and I am not sure what to do to remain active and not do more damage.

I used to be a distance runner (5-10miles every day) before I had a knee injury. I remember my doctor (also a runner) telling me that some people aren't meant to be runners and that my body was taking it hard. But I'm not pushing it like I was then, and I feel like a couple of miles should be feasible.

Any ideas? Recommendations? I am having pain when walking, in both knees.

  • Elliptical. Ice. Anti inflammatories.

If you have access to a pool swimming would be even better. I'm sure you're wearing good shoes but if they're older grab a new pair.

Honestly the pain in my knees finally went away when I got my weight down. I'm not saying that you need to lose any weight, but that's what finally made my pain go away.

  • i would stop running completely, or see a PT to figure out how to do it more safely (which if you had a serious injury before, may not be feasible)

Well, I do need to lose weight, which is why I am trying to work out more. :)

I can't fit in trips to the gym right now, and my at-home Zumba wasn't cutting it, so I was working on running.

But CousinVicki may be right in the end. I come from a long line of osteoarthritis and it just may not be in the cards. My dad is facing a double knee replacement soon.

  • I would definitely stop until it doesn't hurt anymore, just walk instead or bike for a couple of weeks.

Have you gotten fitted for shoes? My knees were killing me last year and I got new shoes and it was like magic.

  • i'm sorry you're crippled.

Not recently, but I have in the past, so I know what shoes work for me.

I have been looking for a bike, so maybe that needs to be my plan.

I think given your history of osteoarthritis I would look into some at home pilates or yoga dvds. They may not be the most fun, but may be the best thing for your legs.

  • After not being able to run for about 5 years due to knee and hip pain on my right side, I've recently started again and am up to 3 (slow) miles with minimal pain. Here's what worked for me:

    1. Switched my running form from a heel strike to a mid-foot strike. Google "barefoot running" for details. Watching videos on youtube helped a lot, but it still took some getting used to. I also switched to a minimalist shoe (Saucony Kinvara).

    2. Religious use of a foam roller on my IT band after every run. I use the roller to massage where the IT band runs along the side of my legs from hip to knee and where it connects deep in my glutes. I recently purchased the Trigger Point Grid roller, which I love.

    3. Ice massage for 5 minutes on the problem knee after every run. Take a chunk of ice and rub it directly on the offending area in a circular motion. Then let it come back to room temp. It hurts but the payoff is worth it.

  • I'm so glad you posted this.  I am having the same issues.
