Need e-ring help

You all know that bf and I are planning on getting married. He is apparently shopping for an e-ring to make it official. I am pretty simple -- I just want a solitaire. We looked at some cuts and I like the asscher or square emerald cut stones. So we got that. But other than that I know nothing about jewelry!

Last night he was asking me questions about some diamonds he saw. He gave me a size range that he is looking at and asked if I'd prefer it to be toward the bigger end and maybe H in color. Or on the smaller end and a better color. None had inclusions that were visable to the naked eye. I have no idea and when I look at diamonds I honestly can't tell the difference in color between an H and G or whatever.

Can someone give me some thoughts on diamonds. Really just looking for different preferences to see if any make sense to me so I can tell him something.

Thanks!

Re: Need e-ring help

  • I'd go for smaller and better color and cut.  Of course, cut might not matter as much if you did go with an emerald cut, since they don't really sparkle much.  Color is pretty important, though.

  • I am pretty set on the asscher or square emerald cut, because I like how they look like a square within a square within a square ... the symmetry is cool to me. I'm super nerdy like that.
  • I don't know a lot about diamonds, but a girl that I work with used to work at a high end jewelry store here so she told me a few things.

-She said a lot of times people are so concerned about size, that they go down in cut and clarity, which she thinks are the two most important things.

-She also said that the 1 carat size is where the prices really start to go up, because people place so much importance on "having a carat".  So if you can go 0.80 of a carat or 0.85, somewhere slightly less, you can get a lot more for your money.

-Blue Nile is a great place to buy stones from, they are very reputable and good quality.

-Just knowing what I know about diamonds, I'd say go for the better cut/color/clarity instead of the bigger rock.  Another girl at my firm has a HUGE rock, but you can tell it's not very good quality.  But the girl who used to work at the jewelry store has a more modest ring (that I LOVE because it's something like this):

And it's absolutely stunning because the quality is SO good that it sparkles and shines all.the.time even if it's dirty.

So that's just my two cents!

  • You won't see much difference between G and H so I'd go with a larger H color over a smaller G color.  Anything beyond H though and you'll see the yellow and color is SUPER important to a diamond looking good.

In general though, I would go with quality over size.

Of the three he liked, H was the lowest color.

  • Also, while Blue Nile is reputable they are also way over priced.

I don't know why more people don't buy diamonds on eBay or from a pawn shop.  As long as it's got a GIA certification, that's the route I'd go.  You'll definitely get the most for your money that way.

He's going through a private jeweler who has a long standing history and great reputation here in Los Angeles.

  • I found this website a while ago you can either search through posts or you can start your own post and ask your question in the forum everyone is very helpful:

  • If you do decide to go asscher, then go high-grade on the cut.  Those can really sparkle.  Not like a princess or brilliant or anything, but enough that you'll notice a poor cut.

This is what we did and I love mine.  I would really let him choose.  I gave DH an approximate size (under a carat, I work with criminals yo) and he did a great job.

I so want him to choose, but he keeps asking me questions and wants my opinion. Last night he was so frustrated because I basically said either of the two he described sound beautiful and he needs to just pick the one he likes better. So apparently I need to give him a little more to go with.

  • I really dig how concerned he is with making sure the ring you will be wearing is the ring you truly want.

  • Ditto the pp's on placing importance on color. Go into a jewelry store that carries loose stones and ask to see 3-5 stones in the same (or very close) side, with varying colors. The difference can be quite amazing.

My stone is F in color (1.3 carats for the radiant cut solitaire and .55 ctw between the two trilliants on either side) and I've had people ask me if it's real because of the way it's so clear and how it sparkles. (I'm not trying to brag by posting sizes, but just trying to help you compare for what you're looking at size/color wise) We purchased ours through a jeweler out of New York that is wholesale and has amazing prices. I can PM you the info if you're at all interested. We had a wonderful experience with them. FF bought the ring on site, but had it custom made (with a wider band because that's what he knew I liked) and shipped to our house. I can't say enough great things about this jeweler.

I also like the ring achase posted...LOVE the halo settings. It really makes a solitaire pop.

ETA: Since we bought from a wholesale diamond dealer, FF was able to buy my ring for about 40% less than what it was appraised at for insurance purposes. Amazing!

  • I ditto the smaller-but-better-color/clarity/cut.  And I'd go for the Asscher so it throws some sparkle.

    This is my siggy.

    This!

When FF and I were ring shopping, I narrowed it down to 3 choices that I loved and then I left the store and waited outside. I was leaving it up to him to pick the style he liked best...or even to leave the store empty handed. Maybe you guys could do something like that?

He said I will be wearing it for the rest of my life and he's only buying one, so I better like it. But when I suggest I go with him, he says no ... that he needs to figure it out.

PiP, no worries about the size post. That is actually in the range he is looking at. I went to a jewelry store at lunch and since I have small hands, bigger actually looked weird on my hand. I told him go for clarity and color over size.

Hi, I lurk on these boards, but my younger brother is looking for an e-ring for his GF and if you wouldn't mind passing me the wholesaler you liked (PM is fine), I'd appreciate it :)

eta: Did he also provide a GIA certification?
