dental hygienist in flip flops
Yesterday I had my 6 month check up and the woman cleaning my teeth was wearing flip flops. I thought it lacked in professionalism. What do you think?
I am seriously thinking of letting the office manager know that I didnt like it.
Re: dental hygienist in flip flops
Were they crocs?
All of my doctors wear clogs of either the Dansko or the Croc variety.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
Was she sticking her feet in your mouth?
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
Wow. I would definitely let the office manager know, since the equipment they use in a dental office is dangerous. I work in a medical office and we are not allowed to wear anything open-toed, sandals, etc., because of the needles and other items we use.
Besides, that is a health hazard.
I was going to rant about the cleavage behind the counter at the post office busting out of some teeny-bopper trainee's tight tee shirt, but yours is better.
You absolutely need to speak with her office manager about that. That is a violation of OSHA standards, and is not acceptable in any way, shape, or form. If the office manager refuses to do anything about it, I would not hesitate to call OSHA to report it.
I work in a dental office and that disgusts me. I don't even wear my work shoes home, let alone consider the idea of walking through the office in flip flops. ANDPLUSALSO, hygiene instruments are sharp! She could seriously injure herself and then cost the company a lot of money!
I'm sorry, I'm so outraged at the idea of this. Goodness gracious.
ETA: Overreaction, yes. I take back my "call OSHA on them", but this whole idea still grosses me out. I read the OP and immediately had a flash of what it would feel like to drop a dirty instrument and get stabbed in the foot with it. My bad.
I guess it is weird. I am just trying to imagine being so offended by someone's footwear that I would complain. Nope, I can't imagine it....
my eyes just got really big
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
Sorry. Aside from the potential hazard to the hygienist and the company that open toed shoes could create, I know what sorts of things are on the floor of a dental office, and I can't imagine ever even being willing to wear flip flops in that environment. I don't even ever have any part of my arms exposed, let alone my legs or feet. It just really grosses me out to even consider.
It had never occured to me to be worried about what's on the floor at my dentist. Now I don't want to go back.
HAHAHAHA! I have patients that put their purse on the floor all the time. I always try to get them to hang their purse on the hook on the wall but most don't seem to be bothered by it. That always fascinates me.
As a dental hygienist, I would NEVER wear open toe shoes while working. You never know what sharp instrument you could drop on your feet (or what will splatter). This is just asking for trouble- or accidentally infecting yourself with some bloodborne pathogen. Gross.
I don't know if it warrants contacting the office manager. If the hygienist was wearing flip flops the office protocol must be pretty relaxed. It wasn't causing you as a patient any harm, was it?
you sound like my worst nightmare
Heavens to Betsy!
I'm not this weird about everything.
I have thought a bit more, and my initial reaction may have been a bit much, but I would still have mentioned it to the office manager because it is a major liability for them. If I didn't work in a dental office myself I'm sure I would be much more likely to shrug it off, like I'm sure I do in other situations.
I tend to be a bit of an over-reactor when it comes to the idea of a hygienist stabbing themselves in the foot with a dirty instrument. Instruments get dropped. A lot. I'm just baffled by the idea of her thinking that flip flops were a smart idea for work wear.
Yes, I'm still digging my hole of overreaction. This I realize. But like I said, I'm not always this crazy. I think. Maybe.
Yeah, yeah, Pixie overreacted.
I take back my "call OSHA on them", but I don't take back my astonishment at the idea of being willing to work in a dental office in flip flops. Yuck.
SEATBELTS people. SEATBELTS!
no one will get this.
/sad moe.
Honestly, you sound like you work at the dental office I'd want to use! There is a certain code of conduct, dress, and safety at any medical practice. There are bodily fluids, sharp instruments, contamination issues, whatever. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable with a dentist that allows his staff to wear flip-flops. If the dentist would allow that, what other safety guidelines is s/he lax about?
