Restless legs after workout at night?

Hi everyone. I introduced myself a while ago but havent been very active. I have a question now. I have been working out three times a week usually around 2 or 3 pm.  Lately when I lay down to go to sleep at night, my legs want to keep moving. It just started since I have been working out hard. Anything to do to help this or prevent it?

TIA!!!!

Re: Restless legs after workout at night?

  • Common causes are low magnesium or potassium or not enough stretching post workout

  • DH gets this. He says foam rolling has helped.

  • Ditto pp. Stretching, foam rolling and magnesium all help. I take Natural Calm (start slowly like it says or you'll end up with diarrhea). I also make sure not to take any antihistamines or anything with stimulants in it because that makes RLS terrible for me.

  • Ditto everyone.

I notice mine not so much from late workouts, but if I have caffeine too late in the day, specifically, a Diet Mtn Dew after 1pm. If I have any other kind of soda Im fine (obviously it has a high caffeine content)

You might not be a caffeine drinker so that might not even apply to you, but just thought I'd pass that along.

  • I had this really bad for a long time. I work 12.5 hour shifts on my feet most of the day and I always felt like my legs couldn't settle down. I started taking magnesium 2 times a day at the suggestion of my doc, and it's completely gone away.

  • I never really considered this before, but it makes sense after seeing others post about it. I started taking a calcium supplement (due to family history of osteoporosis), but it also contains magnesium and zinc. I used to get RLS symptoms frequently due to long hours at work spent on my feet. Since I started taking that I've had very few issues with it. Perhaps it's worth trying.

  • When I was pregnant I had restless legs and my OB told me it was lack of calcium.  I tried increasing my calcium intake and it helped so much!  If I don't get enough milk through out the day, my legs are terrible at night.  It doesn't seem to depend on working out or not though.
  • Thank you ladies. The stretching has really helped a lot.
