All-Clad users, WDYT of this set?

I know that sets are not everyone's cup of tea, but this one seems like a pretty good deal that has pieces almost everyone would use.  I am drooling over it.  I am wondering what the difference between and French Skillet and a fry pan is, but this seems to be a pretty basic set at a good price ($399.95) for All-Clad.  What do you think?

All-Clad d5 Stainless-Steel 5-Piece Cookware Set

Re: All-Clad users, WDYT of this set?

  • What are the different pieces?  Two quart saucepan with lid, 10-inch French skillet, and 12-inch saute pan with lid?

I use my 2-quart saucepan and 10-inch skillet all the time.  The French skillet has higher, straighter sides than mine, which wouldn't be ideal for me but isn't a dealbreaker.

    I have a 12-inch saute pan (not All-Clad) that I never use.  I do use my 12-inch (All-Clad) skillet a lot.

What do the pieces cost individually?

  • The pieces are a 9" french skillet (I couldn't find it separately, but in a set of two french skillets 9" and 11" $149.95), 2 quart saucepan ($195 individually) and a 3 quart saute pan ($265 individually).  I know I would use the saucepan a lot and I think I would use the saute pan for alot of things (I am thinking I would replace my 12" fry pan with it, is that a good or bad idea?).
  • It seems like a good set. I use my 3qt saute pan with lid more than any other pan, except *maybe* my cast iron skillet. I use my 2 qt. a fair amount too (I used both for dinner tonight, heh). I don't have a French skillet, but I use my 10" fry pan a fair amount. Sometimes I wish it were bigger, so I do wonder if the 9" would be too small.

  • On amazon:

    2-quart saucepan with lid - $150

3-quart saute pan with lid - $150 (not free shipping though)

    9-inch French skillet - $72

$372 for those same pieces individually!  Gotta love amazon.

    Are they All Clad D5?

Ditto Elly... I love the 3qt saute and 2 qt sauce... think the 9 inch might be a bit small.

  • BTW. A french skillet is like a cross between a saute pan and a fry pan. The sides are slightly higher than a traditional saute pan, but pan has slightly sloped sides, unlike the straight sides of a traditional fry pan. I almost bought a nice set of French skillets from WS, but found a great deal on saute pans, which I bought instead.

I tend to like purchasing individual pieces, since I can then buy the pieces I really use.
