If you know Pell Grant's please come in
I hate DH's financial aide office. Here's the story: DH was awarded $1300 for last semester/this summer semester in pell grants.
He took last semester off so we were excited that we would be able to use all of his Pell grant for this semester. We were told that it would be no problem...FF to today when he looked at his account and saw only half the Pell grant applied to his tuition. The Financial Aide office now says they split it up and can only give him half, even though WE HAVE THE FULL AMOUNT STILL.
I want to cut a biitch right now. Are we out of luck or should we fight this more?
Re: If you know Pell Grant's please come in
It's always split up between semesters. So, he technically got $650 for last semester and the same for this semester.
You don't get to use the grant if you're not enrolled for the semester for which it was awarded.
They split them up by semester. Sorry.
Welp. That stinks. I mean, if it's policy I guess I understand. I was just so annoyed that we were told one thing, then another, then another.
Thanks guys

I don't think they "told you one thing" and went back on their word.
It's not like you can qualify for $X every semester and bank it up for future use if you're not a student. By that logic one could pay for their entire education in Pell grants alone because they qualified every semester for the past 20 years.
Yeah....that's not how it works.
Agreed!
By your token:
this still holds true. He IS able to use ALL of his Pell grant for this semester. The semester that he's in - i.e. summer semester.
I guess I didn't really explain very well. He just barely applied for financial aid a few weeks ago and was awarded 1,300 for the 2011-2012 semester (spring/summer) and so we didn't have that award back in the beginning of the spring semester because he wasn't even in school.
We were told 2 things. We were told that he only got half and then a week later we were told he would get to use the entire thing this semester and then tonight we were told that he could only use half like we had originally been told.
I don't have a problem if that's the rules, which I think are silly since he was awarded the Pell grant a few weeks ago so obviously he can't use them for the spring semester that was already over when we got the grant. I just don't like getting the run around and being told two different things.
ETA: What you're saying makes total and complete sense and I agree with you. You shouldn't be able to pick and choose in what semester you use the grant. I just don't understand why, if we were awarded this grant literally 2 weeks ago, we can't use the entire grant for this semester

Really, Elle?
Why, that's a wonderful idea! I'll bring it up next Sunday!

Truth. I hated dealing with them when I was in school and I hate them even more now. Sigh. At least he's almost done with school! And, I guess it could be worse. We could be paying his full tuition.

Yes, really. Doing a "mission" in America is not going off to serve the world, it's being obnoxious. And whining you don't get to roll over a grant missed while you were playing missionary to a bunch of people in Washington who have *definitely* already heard of your church is just eww. Actually, the whole mission/men go but women have to be protected and are discouraged from doing it/in your face proselytizing rubs me wrong.
Wait. What? DH served his mission SIX years ago. SIX. He took the semester off of college for financial reasons. He COULDN'T go to school because we were paying for our wedding.
Him serving his mission has absolutely nothing to do with his inability to go to school. None whatsoever.
I know that not everyone likes missionaries. Heck, I find most of them annoying and socially awkward, but that doesn't mean you get to assume things about me and my life that you know nothing about.
And p.s. women aren't discouraged from serving missions. Not at all.

You mean you didn't memorize my entire life story from one intro post?!
It's okay. If it had happened the way that you thought, I would be annoyed with me too.
I get that not everyone loves missionaries. Like I said, I find a lot of them to be overzealous and awkward. A lot of them have lived their entire life in the Utah bubble and are just...crazy. I wish it weren't like that. I was lucky to have some great missionaries in my area when I converted. But that's not really the point...
And to be honest, it rubs me the wrong way that women aren't allowed to go on missions until they're 21 but guys can go when they're 19. But, what can I do about it? Sit up and fret about it or concentrate on the good things that being LDS has brought into my life?
Religion isn't for everyone, and I respect everyone's right to their own beliefs.
