NDR: For those who read all Hunger Games books

I read The Hunger Games and loved it.  I read Catching Fire and did not like it.  Will I like Mockingjay?

  • What specifically did you like about HG and not like about CF?

  • I liked em all, but she did intend for it just to be HG, then got offered a ton of money to write more. It shows a bit probably.
  • Mockingjay was my least favorite, but I finished it because I wanted to know how everything ended.

  • I was annoyed by how whiney Katniss was in CF. She's like that most of Mokingjay so if that's what bothered you, then you won't like it. I guess I kept hoping it would get better, but my favorite is definately the 1st book. That said, it's not like I hated MJ.
  • What didnt you like about Catching Fire?

I loved Hunger Games, loved Catching Fire even more, and could barely get through Mockingjay and didn't like it very much.

  • I really liked the first one, thought the second was so so, and didn't really like the last one. I finished them all just because I hate leaving books (or series) unfinished.

Ditto this - I liked the series in general, but there was stuff in Mockingjay that just didn't make me happy.

  • Sorry, no.  They get progressively worse.  I thought Mockingjay was AWFUL.

    SPOILER ALERT...

What I liked about HG was 1) that it was different - not your usual story.  It was exciting and I wanted to keep reading even though I knew she would surive

What I didn't like about CF was that I felt like it was almost a copy cat of the HG.  That because HG did so well, she had to write another story with another game.  I skimmed through most of the book once I realized where it was going.  Maybe I shouldn't have read them back to back.

  • I really liked HG and CF, but I liked that CF was a lot like the first book but with a bit of a twist. You might like Mockingjay since it is a lot different than the first two. It was my least favorite because of this, though.
  • Really liked HG. Loved CF (I cried repeatedly). Mockingjay felt like everything was concluded and I liked how it ended, but it didn't grab me like the other two.

  • I guess I'll be the lone dissenter, but I enjoyed Mockingjay.  I liked that it wrapped everything up and I liked seeing the evolution of their society.

  • Really? Hunger Games is my favorite, CF is my second, and Mockingjay is probably my least favorite. But I think it's important to read, as it ties everything together and gives some closure to the characters.

I thought the exact same about Catching Fire. I liked Mockingjay, although I do think Hunger Games is better.

  • I loved the first book. The second was somewhat annoying and I hated the third. I did like how it ended and felt like it ended "right" but it was painful to read.
  • Hunger Games was my favorite (the first books in a series are always the best, IMO).  Catching Fire was good, a little similar BUT the ending surprised me.  Mockingjay seemed rushed and unedited but it did wrap things up though.

  • I don't think any of them are as good as HG, but there are a couple of things about CF that I remember surprised me and I liked.  I raced through HG and CF.  But MJ was a tougher read.  There were a couple of surprises, but I didn't really like them. The conflicts seemed a little contrived.  So no, the story just wasn't as good IMO.  BUT I am glad I read it because I crave that sort of resolution.

  • I loved them all, but thought that Mockingjay was a bit of a let down, mostly due to the ending.  I felt like the ending was rushed and not how the characters would've reacted to their situation, based on their personalities throughout the first two and a half books.  I will say that Catching Fire starts off slow, but I did like it.  Now, I am a reading teacher for junior high, so I get to talk about these books with teenagers all day long; since that was the intended audience, I will say that the kids do not tend to notice and pick at what we adults do.  Overall, they were just good reads.  It was the first series since Harry Potter that was really able to grab me and hold my attention.
