ugh, great, my grandma has mrsa

in some boil on her neck that she had lanced last week. The doctor called her yesterday. He told her that if she hadn't touched it and then held J before washing her hands, there was nothing to worry about. And she had some gauze and a band-aid over it while we were there. I'm trying not to get anxious here! My baby!

Is it just me, or does it seem like mrsa is everywhere these days?

Re: ugh, great, my grandma has mrsa

  • It is everywhere, try not to worry too much.  How long did they say it would be before it clears up?

The same thing happened to us last year.  My mom was watching Jackson a lot when he had rsv and one day she called and was said "oh btw, that spot on my nose is actually mrsa."

At that point it was there for weeks and no one else ended up getting it.

    eww! noo!!

Peachy - thanks, that makes me feel better.  I didn't ask her how long it was going to take to clear up b/c  I was too busy trying to be breezy on the phone! lol

  • Staph aureus and MRSA are opportunistic pathogens.  The methicillin resistant strain doesn't it make it more likely to cause an infection, just harder to treat.  A lot of people have this without getting infections, and a large part of the population has staph aureus as the normal flora on their skin.

Try not to freak out, it isn't like TB or the flu.  Exposure does not mean automatic infection.

And I will refrain from my overuse of antibiotics rant....

  • Honestly, I wouldn't risk it. I had a client tell me she had MRSA and I cancelled her appointment. I couldn't risk bringing something like that home to DH with his compromised immune system.

I'd wait until she was MRSA free.

    I'm sure she will understand.

Thanks for the info, Kristie. And I am with you about the overuse of antibiotics!

His - I already took Joanna to see her on Sunday. My grandma was calling to let me know about the mrsa since she had held J when we were over there.

  • ugh!  YES... mrsa is all over the GD place these days!!!  I actually had a mrsa UTI a couple years ago, remember?  After my ectopic?  ugh.  Damn hospitals!!!

  • I had mrsa and it took months to finally clear it up.  Nobody got it from me.  FWIW, I think that 30%(?) of the population carries mrsa in their nose.

  • My mom's a pediatric nurse and she says tons of little kids are coming in with it. I think it's the new chicken pox - we're all going to get it eventually.
