Backsplash opinions...

Hi! New to D&R...my husband and I are moving into a new home in July (we are moving out of our condo into a bungalow) and I am trying to plan out some of our renos...we are going to be doing some work in the kitchen and I would love some feedback about the backsplash in the kitchen...

We have white cabinets and will have a black granite countertop (we currently have a mix - some cream laminate and some almost black Corian), and we will have black cork installed (currently have grey/white vinyl).

I guess I am wondering if people see backsplash as something that can easily be redone if your 'style' changes...I am leaning towards something really simple and white but then I wonder if I am being too 'boring'...I don't know if I should take a leap and do something red.

TIA

Re: Backsplash opinions...

  • Okay, I got a photo to go in below!  The current backsplash is some white tile with a sort of black tile border in some areas but we have an area behind the stove that is a purple subway tile...we want to make it all match regardless of whether we do something 'white' or something more 'creative'.

  • I personally love this tile from Lowes. I have no idea of the quality, but if I had white cabinets and black counters I think it would pull everything together beautifully.

  • While a backsplash can be redone, it is a pain to remove the old tile and replace it.  You also risk damaging your countertops and/or cabinets.  I would go simple with the backsplash and add color through paint and accessories, which are much easier to change on a whim.

  • I don't see re-tiling as an easily to re-do project. I've chosen something neutral (marble subway tile) so that as my style changes, the backsplash won't dictate choices. Tiling is easy. It's the demo of old/re-tiling that is a ton of work.
  • Thanks ladies...you have more or less confirmed what I already knew...I will go for something fairly neutral and simple and then add to the look elsewhere through paint and accessories.
