Lurker needed a critique for a baby shower menu

Hello! Lurker here in need of some help with a menu. I'm planning a girls only barbq baby shower and the theme is pigs. Can you please critique the menu?

Menu is:

cheeseburgers with sharp cheddar (will buy premade into patties from deli)

blue cheese burgers (will buy premade into patties from deli)

hot dogs

marinated grilled chicken and pineapple kebabs

marinated balsamic grilled portobello, tomato, red pepper, zucchini, onion kebabs (mixed up)

grilled bacon wrapped dates (I feel like I can't do a pig theme without bacon somewhere on the menu)

all the condiments/ buns for these

Salads:

fruit salad

cold thai peanut noodle salad

Sides:

grilled corn on the cob

grilled asparagus

kettle potato chips & french onion dip

Dessert:

ice cream cone cupcakes with sprinkles

like this

image

mini pies (probably peach or strawberry rhubarb)

vanilla ice cream

Drinks:

non alcoholic drinks will be water, raspberry lemonade, iced tea, sodas

alcoholic drinks will be blue moon w orange slices, pinot grigio, and Pimms is the cocktail

And most importantly, if someone was throwing you a shower, would you be annoyed it was a bbq and not a more elegant affair? We might do a game or two that is trivia based about the mom to be, but it will be more about socializing and less about shower games. Most of the guests know each other well so there is not really a need for ice breakers. I should also mention she will be having another family shower that won't be as casual. I will tie the theme in through the invites little pig cut outs on some of the mini pies, and a piggy bank where guests can drop in handwritten wishes for the mom.

The menu looks pretty good to me.  You seem to have all of the bases covered for protein, carb, veggie options...

As to whether I would be annoyed..definitely not.. it is very nice of you to host a shower at all.  I do know a few ladies who might be though so I know where you're coming from.  Only you know your friend well enough to know if this is her kind of thing or not.

  • I think you've covered everything but its a lot of food. If you end up needing to cut something, I'd go with the bleu cheese sliders. I also might switch out the cold noodle salad for a pasta or potato salad, but thats just on preference of what I think my guests would like to eat.

I wouldn't be annoyed at all if it was a bbq, the food you're making is still pretty "fancy" compared to some bbq's. :)

This.  How many people is this for?  It's a TON of food!

And the noodle salad doesn't really "fit" with the rest of it, IMO--I'd do a more standard pasta salad, like PP mentioned.

  • i think a bbq shower is a great idea. the only issue i see is that most people get a bit dressed up for showers and most of the items above (burgers, etc..) can be messy food eaten with the hands. Just have enough napkins and wipes available.

i'd also do a pasta salad instead of the other salad you list.

the other thing is the desserts. i'd put a fruit salad or something in there as well.
