Our living room windows have these awful floor to ceiling 1970's drapes. They have always been bad and became worse when the baby decided to reach back and grab some to wipe her avocado hands on at lunch, and then raspberries at dinnertime.
I hate them. they need to go.
On one side of the room (the "living room") they cover small windows (45 x 49) on the other side of the room (the "dining room") they cover a sliding glass door.
For the windows, I want to do some sort of blinds (perhaps roman shades?). For the sliding glass door, I want to do drapes because we already have the fixtures and that is probably the best choice for the space.
- It needs to be cheap. We renovate in eight years so it doesn't have to be great. Plus, I'm cheap.
- the walls are dull (off white)
- the furniture is simple and dark brown with a bit of an urban feel (from when we were in NYC)
- the floors are carpeted the color of light brown sugar (ugh. it came with the house and hides baby stains.)
Ideas?
Re: Find me interesting window treatments
unfortunately, my current favorite drapes are at anthropologie. Some gorgeous crewel ones but super expensive. I won't be purchasing them though, unless I found them on ebay uber cheap.
My cousin, an interior designer, suggested checking out Urban Outfitters - they have curtains as well, but less pricey w/ some interesting designs.
JC Penney seems to have a lot of window treatments but I haven't really browsed all of them. Though I want some cool curtains for baby room/office, I might just go w/ a solid color blackout curtain and then get an overlay of some sort.
Yes, this does not help you much. But I just felt like contributing since I"ve been browsing curtains on and off.
Me? *blushes* Window treatments aren't something I've even considered.
Plus, why me? I'm nobody, lol.
I like JC Penney for cheaper window treatments. I'm a fan of these cellular shades:

Sorry if this isn't your style! It's hard to pick without seeing the room.
Oh good! I hadn't thought of them either.
I sent my cousin an email w/ the ones I fell in love with, wanted to know if she knew where I should order fabric to make some and she suggested Urban Outfitters. I had no idea they did curtains before that!
What a nice compliment.
I haven't shopped window treatments. Rugs I've looked at, and then for her specifically I looked at her style in the pics she posted and suggested the Overstock rug.
(I also like the cordless cellular blinds you posted above. I'm going to look into those)
I have these from there and love them:

Sure - they were a great purchase. I also have a little matching leaf rug underneath them. I can pip tomorrow if you'd like.
Relaxed roman shades seem to look the nicest.
I've been looking around and haven't seen "it" yet.
I think with your neutral palette you could do a lot with window treatments.
I'll look for a few more minutes, at 1 est, I'm out.
Psst, etsy, might have what you're looking for:

I didn't look through yet, but etsy usually has somewhat original items, not sure it'll fall into the cheap category.

Where Should I Shop?
There?s no substitute for touching fabric and feeling its heft, so it?s a good idea to check out curtains in the store or order swatches (higher-end sites will allow you to do this) before making a purchase. Some retailers will even lend you large fabric samples to take home and hang in front of your window. Below are some reliable sources, most of which you can visit in person as well as online.
Lower Priced
A range of colors and pretty patterns abound, but materials are mostly limited to unlined cotton, linen, and polyester.
Midpriced
Many curtains from these retailers are lined, so they?ll drape better.
Higher Priced
Expect to find every style, rendered in especially luxurious fabrics.
