Numbness in toes while running?

Anyone have this? I have had it for almost a week. If it continues I'll go see a doctor but was wondering if anyone had experienced this and what worked for you?

  • Are you sure your shoes fit correctly? I haven't experienced that while running, but sometimes it happens when I'm on the elliptical. I think it's related to the position of my feet.

    Are you wearing new shoes?

    I have had this happen with shoes that were too tight.

  • Are you tying your shoes too tight?
  • It's your shoes. the toe area is too tight - could be the shoes themselves, could be how they're tied, could be extra-bulky (or wrinkled-up) socks. Change your shoes and it will go away.

  • If it's cold outside and/or I'm especially nervous (race day) it takes several miles for me to feel my toes. For me it's nerves and circulation related.
  • Shoes being too tight is the easiest thing to check out, loosen the laces. If you don't wear a wide shoe, you may have to. Other causes are tightness in the calves, plantar fascitis (usually also includes foot pain but not always), and other nerve issues.

    Having dealt with this myself, and to a certain extent still do, here are my suggestions:

    1) Loosen your shoes, especially from the arch down

    2) Stretch your calves after running, and use a foam roller/the stick for massage

    3) Warm up! A 1/4 mile at walking pace helps me a lot - my 5k this Saturday was the first time I had zero numbness, and we had to walk about 1/2 mile from the car to the startline 

    4) Take a tennis ball and roll your foot on it in the evening or while sitting at a desk

    5) Honestly, keep running, and your body may adjust

    6) If none of this works and you want to keep running, see a doctor
