I have a bone to pick with TofuMonkey

Just kidding. Just thought it would catch her attention.

If you havent checked out her blog, you have to do it because it is supper funny. HOWEVER, I made the mistake of reading her blog entry where she talks about her fear of flying right before boarding my plane to Holland. I hate flying and I freak out during every flight. Anyway, this time around I was holding on for dear life and couting to 180. According to Tofu, the first 180 seconds and the last 180 seconds are the most dangerous. I think I nearly gave myself a heart attack but I did feel a bit better after counting to 180.

  • Caught my attention ;-)

I'm also afraid of flying and have watched every episode of that show where they go through the investigations of plane crashes and analyze what happened. It actually makes me feel better because they almost always end by explaining what new regulations are in place so it can't happen again. Anyway, most planes really do crash on take-off and landing, so until that ding comes for the passengers to take off their seat belts, my heart is pounding. For some reason landings don't scare me even though they're also pretty dangerous as far as accidents go.

If it makes you feel any better, 70% of people survive plane accidents. I say accidents and not crashes on purpose. Obviously those where the plane flips over and falls out of the sky (happened twice in the 80s/90s, but Boeing has since fixed the part that made them do that) don't have a high survival rate, and that's what I think of as a crash. But the accidents where it catches fire on landing or careens off the runway, etc, a lot of people survive. Or if you've got an awesome pilot who lands with no engines in the Hudson, but I'd be happy if I never have to experience something like that.

Ok, enough on planes from me.

  • Every time I am on a plane, I always think of the movie Say Anything where the guy says  that you are safe as soon as they turn off the seatbelt sign.

Landings dont scare me as much because I expect the plane to be heading to the ground. But I hate clouds. Every time we go through them, the plane starts to bump along and I am saying to myself, I hate clouds, I hate clouds, and everyone around me is looking like I am crazy.

See for me, I'm happy when it's clouds. Then I have a logical and non-impending-crash-related explanation for the plane just having dropped 100 meters.

  • Ba ha ha ha ha ha!

I take great pleasure in now knowing that I'm not the only lunatic in the skies frantically counting to 180. Mwah ha ha ha ha ha.
