Rose bushes

Help please....all of a sudden, like overnight, my rose bush started blooming like crazy and I have a gazillion new buds. Problem is it needs to be clipped back seriously - the brances have spread out too much and is partially blocking a path, not to mention the thorns grab you as you walk by.

How do I trim it? I know I probably should have trimmed it when the leaves started coming back from the winter, but like I said it seems like it happened overnight.

You can prune them now but you will lose all the blossoms or wait until they finish there big late spring bloom. If you prune after they bloom you will probably get more flowers later in the season but yes, you should have pruned them when the buds started to swell in the spring.

Prune off the entire offending branch back to it's origin.  If you cut the branch just to the point where it doesn't obstruct the path anymore, you'll stimulate the remaining part of the branch to grow like crazy and your problem will get worse.

I have rose bushes in my front yard that I cut back all season because they grow like they're on steroids.

I knew I'd lose whatever buds I had but I didn't think about just cutting back a little would stimulate growth...that helps.
