Anyone else sweat a LOT while working out?

I feel like I sweat a lot when I work out, way more than the average person. I'll go out for a run and sweat will literally be dripping off of me after 30 minutes. When I take a class at the gym, sometimes I will literally be the only person in the room breaking a sweat, while everyone else seems cool and collected. I don't necessarily think I'm always working harder than everyone else, but I think my body gets overheated easily. I don't think this is a "problem," but it is annoying sometimes, especially when I'm sweating more than the men! Anyone else in this boat?

Re: Anyone else sweat a LOT while working out?

  • Oh I'm right there with you! And I'm planning to write a blog post about it later this week. I recently hit a big milestone in my gym and posted a picture of the accomplishment on Facebook and my closest friend commented about how sweaty I was. Not how proud she was of me for making this breakthrough. Just how sweaty my armpits were.

I'm sorry, but when it's 80 degrees outside, there's no air conditioning in the garage, and I'm pumping 90 lbs over my head, sweat is going to happen.

It's good for your skin anyhow.

  • No, I glisten ;)

But seriously, I am a big, sweaty mess.  And I'm a group fitness instructor so I think it's actually motivating for the class to see me making sweat puddles on the floor.

  • Yep, a ton. During my training sessions, I'm always toting around a towel and trying wipe my back/leg/butt sweat off the benches before anyone sees it.

  • I sweat a ton too.  My hair is soaking wet after a run or kickboxing class...looks like it would after I get out of the shower!

  • I definitly don't think you are in the minority!!
  • Oh, yes.  I'm a sweaty mess, and constantly have to wipe my face with a towel.  I like it, though, and isn't it good for your body to produce a good sweat?

  • I sweat like a racehorse.  I could wring out my shirt after a 45 minute workout.  Yecch.  And to make it worse, my husband hardly sweats at all.  Not fair!

Yup - I'm in the same boat.  Heck I sweat when I'm cold!  And DH doesn't sweat at all.  I'm all sweaty, hair is soaking wet and my cheeks get beet red.

Next week, I'm doing a Zumbathon with some friends who are talking about going out after.  Um, sorry the only place I go after a workout is the shower!

  • I bet I sweat more than you, and it isn't a competition I'd want to win ;-)  I've come to accept it though.  I just hate when sweat drips in my eyes and burns my contacts.  And I could never ever work out and not wash my hair after....I must have a boatload of sweat glands on my scalp because my hair is soaked after any workout.  It makes me wonder when I see girls with dry hair and makeup in place if they just don't work hard, or they are just blessed with no sweat glands.  Oh well :)  Work it girl!

  • yeah. sometimes I get embarrassed when I'm on the TM sweating like a man, easily the sweatiest person within eyesight.

I've heard that sweating early and often is a physiological adaptation.  as you get more 'fit' your body starts sweating more and sooner because it's more efficient at keeping your core cool.  this is just what  I remember from undergrad physiology class.

  • I sweat a ton too.  I was invited to run a 5K to celebrate a friend finnishing C25K, and afterwards they were all going out for a beer.  I was like, really?  Yuk.  My shorts are wet, my shirt is wet and my face is beet red.  And I don't smell very nice either.  I agree, you are not in the minority here.
  • I sweat like a mutha. I live in South Florida and am an outdoor runner, so I can guarantee that 9 times out of 10, I'm drenched by the first mile. It happens. Sometimes I'll wear a wristband to wipe my forehead with to keep sweat out of my eyes (it hurts!), but yeah, I'm one of those who could easily wring out their shirt after even doing 3 miles.

  • I sweat a hell of a lot, too.  Something I've found that makes it a little more bearable is wearing dri-fit workout gear.  If you are wearing a cotton t-shirt while you're working out, it will get drenched and heavy, and that sucks!

  • Yup, I sweat like a total hog.  You're not alone!
  • Just another sweaty mess checking in.  You're definitely not alone.

  • OMG I sweat so much, but during the classes I take my only consilation is that everyone else is equally sweaty. The worst part is that I seem to sweat a lot in the crotch area and that just looks lovely. I gross myself out.

  • I sweat an ungodly mess, even during yoga.  My body runs hot, so when I exercise it ain't pretty.

And YES! to the fitness instructor who said she thinks its motivating to her students.  My favorite instructors all sweat.  It makes me feel good because they are way more fit than I am so, if they are sweating buckets and I'm keeping up, then I'm doing alright!

This is exactly why all of my workout pants/capris/shorts are black.

  • I sweat a lot, and I'm pale, so my face turns BRIGHT red the second it gets above 80 out, so you know... any exercise that raises my temp automatically puts me in lobster mode.  In high school I worked at a grocery store where the baggers carry people's bags to the car... I swear they promoted me to cashier just so the customers would stop asking if I was ok.

But yeah, on topic, I sweat like rainfall.

  • Yes I sweat a LOT, even though I'm in a dry climate. When I go out of town and run it's much worse. I've also heard that it's a good thing. Sweating is how your body cools off (when the blood flows under the wet skin it cools, and then the cooler blood travels throughout your body to cool it down). I've heard that your body gets more efficient at this if you exercise a lot, so you start sweating quickly and you sweat more.

  • I sweat tremendously! And my face gets BEET red. Lovely ;) But like one member said above, I think it makes my skin look better!

  • Yup right there with all of ya. I always make sure to carry my towel with me and wipe down the equipment after I use it. I also can't get away with working out and not washing my hair afterward.

Same for me.  I hate when it gets into my contacts!  I train at a fitness studio and there is only one other lady that sweats a lot so we like to hang out together.  Haha!

  • Sweating could be normal and productive but could also be a sign of a health issue. If you don't think you used to sweat that much, it might be worth seeing a doc for a physical. I overheat very easily (like hot sweats) thanks to Graves' Disease (hyperthyroidism), even just with doing something that doesn't even require a lot of physical activity, like washing dishes with hot water or taking a shower. So make sure to get your thyroid levels checked just in case. It's a routine test and if you're okay, you'll have a baseline to compare if you ever have an issue. There are millions of people who may have an undiagnosed thyroid issue - mine went undiagnosed for 5+ years thanks to an incompetent GP. Good luck! :)
