Another News Post

Do you agree with Burns that not celebrating Mother's Day is an effective way to bring awareness to the topic of maternal mortality, and women dying because of complications during pregnancy and child birth?

I actually read this article along with watching the video... Shocking to some, I know.

Re: Another News Post

  • I'm not reading that or watching the video, but no. I think it's an AW-ish move. It's a fake sacrifice - they are not giving up anything, really, but trying to make it appear as though they are.

I do think mother's day is an excellent time to bring attention to maternal mortality, I just think this is an assy way to do it.

  • Does it bring awareness? Sure. I mean, we're talking about it now and we weren't before, right?

Does it offer a concrete solution to the problem? Not really. I wish celebrities would advocate for actions (other than FB silliness) when they glom onto causes like this.

I agree with this completely. And they're wanting people to "disappear" for Mother's Day, which means people aren't even going to get on FB and say "oh, I'm boycotting mother's day to raise awareness for maternal mortality". They're just sitting around doing literally nothing.

I wish instead she would've said "I've asked my child(ren) to donate to a charity that works toward preventing maternal morality in lieu of a mother's day gift. Please consider doing the same." It's still kind of tacky, but much more effectual.

"Wow, c_joy isn't updating her Facebook page today. How powerful!"

Um, no. How about we demand that our politicians support things like better maternal health care, contraception and clean water?

  • I think it makes about as much sense as how a 48 hr food fast raises awareness of third world hunger. By all means, let's not eat the food thats right in front of us so we can do something superficially meaningful for those who would eat our food if it was right in front of them.
