How can I better deal with allergies?

Now that Im running outside again, my allergies are CRAZY. As I was running, so was my nose, my chest was super tight and my throat got all itchy and watery eyes. I never have trouble with allergies so Im not medicated but this year is sooo bad because we didnt have much of a winter and the pollen count is tremendous. Should I just use OTC to control or see a doctor?

Re: How can I better deal with allergies?

  • I'm sorry :( that sounds really miserable.  If you are anything like me you'd have to be in some seriously miserable pain before going to the doctor - but it might help to see one.  It sounds like you have pretty severe symptoms.

That being said, there are lots of OTC products that help many people.  If I were you I'd try a couple before heading to the doc (since I'm a last resort kind of person).  Maybe even ask a pharmacist if there are any OTC products they recommend?

  • Zyrtec and a neti pot (used fitlered water if you are unsure of your water safety) are my best friend! I have been waiting to run/bike outside all winter, and now I step out the door and am hit with runny nose, itchy eyes & ears, sore throat, the list goes on and on! I do have an allergy doctore as I have been getting shots for the past year or so, but this is the worst year ever for my allergies!

  • Most of the rx meds are now OTC.  My favorite is Allegra.
  • Allegra does nada for me, but it works great for my DH, he also likes zyrtec, which has no affect on me.  I use claritin fairly regularly in combo with original recipe sudafed (the kind you have to sign for), and occasionally we both use flonase.

the antihistamines are really trial and error as far as what will work for you.

  • I have ridiculously bad allergies and even the shots didn't work. I'm not on to sub lingual antigen drops which have shown improvement but I also take Claritin D and use a sinus rinse like the Neti-pot. It seems to be working at this point but I have noticed that this year seems to be much worse than previous years!

  • I also get horrible allergies in the spring. I have tried the OTC methods but i finally broke down and went to my doc.

It made a huge difference. During the spring I use a nasal spray, inhaler and zytrec OTC. The inhalers really help me get through this time of year and still run outside.

Thank you all! This really helped. I will try OTC and if it doesnt help Ill make an appt. The tightness in my chest makes me nervous.

  • As for the OTC, the only advice I have is that you need to switch it up with the different meds, they eventually stop working,  I went to the allergist last fall and now I have a perscription.

Another piece of advice is to run at night.  I find the air much clearer at night.

  • I have really bad allergies.  When the allergyst did the prick test on my back, it was awful.  I had a reaction to quite litterally everything.  I am on RX Singulair, with OTC zyrtec (equate brand is identical and WAY cheaper) along with an RX nasal spray - Veramyst.  If I run out of any of the three I can immediately start to get allergy symptoms again.  But when I am on all three, NO ALLERGIES whatsoever!!!  Maybe a trip to the allergyst is needed....especially if you will be outside running alot.
