Do any of you ever get tension headaches?

I have been getting them pretty often lately.  I'm not really sure what is causing them but they always start in my back and spread up towards my head.  I can't seem to find any thing to help them.

If any of you have them how do you get rid of them?  Taking Aleve doesn't help.  My DH massaging my shoulders helps some...but it would take him rubbing for awhile to get rid of it!

Ugh I'm ready to go home...two more hours!

Re: Do any of you ever get tension headaches?

  • All the time.  Mine always start in my shoulders and work their way up.  Usually mine are from sitting at the computer too long, or sitting slumped over too long.

Drinking a lot of water will help keep mine at bay.  Sometimes if I get desperate I'll drink a Diet Coke or something with caffeine (I don't drink soda).  Advil will help lessen them, but never makes them go away - it helps them be tolerable.

  • I LOVE Excedrin Tension Headache (contains caffeine) - knocks mine out every time.

  • nope, I really only get migraines which I'm sure is MUCH worse.  Have you thought about going to see a chiropractor (this is the pot calling the kettle black b/c I SO need to go to one here.........) but that should help you a lot, plus they could give you exercises to do to loosen those muscles.

    HTH!!!

OH and there is some Excedrin Tension headache and also if you haven't tried it, try "headon" that stuff REALLY works!!!

    hope you feel better!!

  • I second Excedrin! I love it! it really works well.

  • I have had tension headaches through all the way to my jaw a few years ago.  I was told (by a doctor, so I trust it!) a remedy for both migraines/tension headaches.

    4 Ibuprofen
    2 Extra Strength Tylenol
    1 Excedrin

Take that and go to bed, it should help...it always cured me!

  • I get them all. the time. My chiro said that at some point I sustained a low-grade neck injury in one of my disks and a lot of my tension headaches begin there, but it also has a lot to do with how I'm sleeping. My neck needs a lot of support when I sleep, and if my pillow is too squishy or flat I'll wake up the next morning with sore shoulders and an aching head and neck.

The best thing to do when you get them according to my chiro is to apply ice to your neck where it hurts the worst and just try to rest through it. I've found that putting a cold rag on my face helps as well if the headache manages to get far enough along to start hurting in my face (usually my temples or behind my eyes).

If I can catch it early enough first thing in the morning, two ibuprophens are usually enough to dull the pain for the rest of the day.

There are also great stretches you can do, given to me by my chiro's in house physical therapist:

    1) standing up, lean just your head and neck forward and keep your shoulders back, then lace your fingers and place them on the back of your neck. Start with just allowing the natural weight of your hands to stretch the muscles in your neck, count to five, then inhale and exhale and allow your body to naturally sink deeper in the stretch. Do this for 1 minute.

    2) standing up, bend your right arm at your elbow and hold it behind your back, letting it naturally fall on the curve of your back. Tilt your head to the left, and place your left hand on your head. Use the natural weight of your left hand to provide a little bit of an extra stretch. As before, count to five then inhale and exhale and allow your body to sink into a deeper stretch. Do this for 1 minute, then switch sides.

(not that I'm one to talk b/c I'm sure my liver is SO on it's way out from all that I take!!!) BUT that seems like a LOT of accetimetiphen (sp?) and aspirin........ which I know excessive dosses are bad for your liver and stomach?  But I guess if your dr told you so?!?!?!!?

  • I thought so too! They said it should just be taken when you are having the worst pain of your life and nothing else has helped.  I was in tears in my bed when my dr told me to take it.  They also said to not take it daily or weekly or anything like that, just every once in a while.  I haven't taken that combo in about 2 years.

I was told that, and in a meeting with lab/nursing the other day they were talking about it, so I guess it's ok for every once in a while!
