Here is a rundown of the props and how I am voting:
Prop 2
Standards for Confining Farm Animals
Would require the California Health and Safety Code to prohibit the confinement of certain farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs. The measure would deal with three types of confinement: veal crates, battery cages, and sow gestation crates.
If approved by the voters, the statute would become operative on January 1, 2015. Farming operations would have until that date to implement the new space requirements for their animals, and the measure would prevent animals in California from being confined in these ways in the future.
*Voting Yes = you want the animals you eat to be comfortable.
Voting No = this one is really a no brainer, vote yes. The egg argument is a stupid one.
Prop 4Abortion Waiting Period and Parental Notification Initiative
The initiative would prohibit abortion for unemancipated minors until 48 hours after physician notifies minor?s parent, legal guardian or, if parental abuse has been reported, an alternative adult family member.
Kids are receiving botched abortions. If parents are abusive teen can opted to notify another adult family member. If a minor becomes pregnant because of sexual violence or predation, a sexual predator may be missed, because the abortion clinic may not report the sexual crime. Although clinics are mandated reporters of abuse, repeated cases of sexual predators concealing crimes through secret abortions reveals a broken system in CA and the need for family notification.
*Voting Yes = voting that teens have to notify an adult, prior to receiving an abortion.
Voting No = voting the teens do not have to notify an adult.
Prop 7Renewable Energy Initiative
Requires California utilities to procure half of their power from renewable resources by 2025. California utilities will be required to increase their purchase of electricity generated from renewable resources by 2% annually to meet Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirements of 40% in 2020 and 50% in 2025. Under current law, investor-owned utility companies must comply with an RPS of 20% by 2010.
Groups who are against:
Pacific Gas & Electric Southern California Edison Sempra California Municipal Utilities Association The California Democratic Party The California Republican Party The California Green Party The California Peace & Freedom Party The California Labor Federation The California Taxpayers' Association |
The League of California Cities The California Solar Energy Industries Association The Sierra Club of California The California League of Conservation Voters The Natural Resources Defense Council The Union of Concerned Scientists |
Prop. 7 will slam the brakes on renewable energy development. It locks into law many flaws that are currently stifling renewable power development in California and creates new roadblocks to renewable development. Prop. 7 arbitrarily shifts authority over the renewables market from the California Public Utilities Commission to the California Energy Commission, which could lead to significant delays, added bureaucracy and costly lawsuits.
Voting Yes = driving prices up for your utility bill.
*Voting No= leaving things as is.
Prop 8Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.
Do you want to play God?
Voting Yes = voting to eliminate their right to marry.
*Voting No= voting to leave the CA Constitution as is, leaving rights untouched.
Re: My 2 cents on the CA Propositions
I don't think prop 2 is a no brainer...I'm actually torn on this one.
and I'm voting no on prop 4. Last thing we need in this world is more un-wanted kids....
I was torn on 4 - but after some research it just scares me. I totally understand both sides - but it leaves me uneasy to think that a 14 year old can walk into a clinic and pay for an abortion (I understand that there is counseling too) without having anyone know.
I also understand the argument that some girls/women don't have the luxury of being table to talk to a parent due to sexual/physical/verbal abuse, but the wording also extends it to an adult family member. I am curious to know what happens if the girl doesn't have anyone else other than her parents, especially if one of them is abusive.
The naive side of me likes to think that if Prop 4 passes it might deter a 14 yo that much more from having unprotected sex - I know, naive.
No on all but 2 and 9. Measure R : I definately want rail extensions, but there were a lot of questions not answered in this measure, so I'm gonna have to vote NO. I'd really like to be able to take the rail to LAX and to the west side.
