Wellness Core and dry skin?? Need suggestions!
Hello,
I switched my 2 dogs to Wellness Core and i thought it would help their skin, but they both have dry skin issues now. I'm not too familiar with the grain-fee food...maybe its too high in protein? Maybe I should try the ocean formula from Wellness? If anyone has expierenced this and have any suggestions to switch to a different food?
Thanks!!
Re: Wellness Core and dry skin?? Need suggestions!
Not every food agrees with every dog, even if the food is high quality. I feed Wellness Core, and both of my dogs do very well on it. I rotate the varieties because my dogs are fine with chicken, turkey, and fish, but it might be worth trying the Ocean variety to see if your dogs do better on that. You could also try adding salmon oil, which promotes skin and coat health. Ultimately, if Core doesn't work, there are lots of other great options. Have you looked at www.dogfoodanalysis.com (4-6 star foods)?
I don't think Core is high in protein compared to many other grain-free foods. Core has 33-34% crude protein. TOTW and Canidae (grain-free ALS) are comparable at ~32%. EVO jumps up to ~42%. Orijen is ~40%.
What were you feeding before you switched to Core? Did your dogs have any issues on that food (dry skin, etc.)?
Thanks for the info and some suggestions. I was feeding them both Eukanuba Adult formula and they both likes it and did well on it (no skin issues). I always give them Salmon oil as well. I wanted to change to a better quality food and also read that grain-fee might help with their skin and reduce the "dog smell". They both LOVE the food, but doesn't do their skin well. Maybe it's the turkey formula..i'll try the Ocean formula and go from there...
Put a tablespoon of olive oil in the Wellness CORE. Every few days throw either a raw egg or sardines in with the kibble.
Definitely - I noticed both of these changes in my dogs when I switched them to higher quality, grain-free food. One of my pugs had bald patches and red, itchy, inflamed skin when we adopted him and smelled terrible. As soon as we switched him to Core, he started improving rapidly. His coat grew in very thick and plush, the inflamed skin went away, and he doesn't have that bad smell anymore. It might just be a matter of finding which food works best for your pups. GL!
