How much would you pay for used furniture?

Hello, I'm new to this board, but I'm struggling a bit with finding nice/affordable furniture so I was wondering if anyone here had any input. My husband and I are going to be moving from a 1bdrm appt into a 3bdrm house next week, so I want to get a different living room set. Our furniture is horribly mismatched since we mostly bought our sofa out of necessity (we only have three pieces of furniture in our living room). Anyway, I want to avoid spending a large amount of money on new furniture, so I've been spending a lot of time looking through craigslist ads. I came across a very nice looking living room set (sofa, loveseat, chair & ottoman) that appears to have been very well maintained. The owners stated that the set retailed for over 3k and are asking $875 OBO. I asked if they would be willing to sell just the sofa/loveseat as I don't want the chair/ottoman, but they said no b/c they want to sell this as a set. Do you think this is too much for used furniture? What would you be willing to pay for a nice, used living room set? I can provide the link if that would help. I appreciate any input you could give. Thanks.

  • I would rather spend the money on brand new furniture.

I am sure you can find a good deal at furniture stores with Memorial Day sales.

  • I depends how nice it is. You'd be hard pressed to find junk for under $1000, and it will look and feel cheap. If you love this set, then it's worth whatever it's worth to you.

Another option is to buy slip covers for your current furniture and take your time to furnish your new place.
  • Hmm, that's a tough situation. That's probably a reasonable price for all that furniture. I'm always shocked at how expensive furniture is new. But if you can't afford brand new furniture, you can't afford it. It's not worth going into debt over.

Do any of the furniture stores near you have discount outlets? They sometimes have pretty good deals.

How much do you like the Craigslist stuff? If you really love it and can afford it, I say go for it. You can always sell the extra chair. If you're just so-so, I would save my money and shop around some more.
