Nervous putting dog in kennel for first time :(

Hi ladies.

I'm a nanny and pretty much take care of the family's 4 lb teacup poodle. Whenever they go on vacation he always stays with me or my parents. Next month I am going away same time they are and my mom is watching my cat. Tried putting them together but they do not get along and I'm not making my cat miserable.

How do you put them in a kennel? I'm a nervous wreck. I have an appt tomorrow to look a pet resort/spa kennel. I know few pp who use it but ollie has never been in a crate or left alone for more than 6 hrs. I know they have "bigger" rooms w/cot and tv. He uses a pee pad and they said he can't use them at the kennel. Will he hold it when they take him out every 2 hrs? He is already on prozac...ugh. I feel like I am abandoning him :(

Please reassure me he will survive few days. Sorry so long.

Re: Nervous putting dog in kennel for first time :(

  • Hi! i work at a pet resort. Is this kennel the only one around you? If not then i would look around. we allow potty pads to put in the kennel, so it might be good to find one that allows it. Also my work does playgroups, personal play, tender care time, along with the potty walks. I'll explain a little better. Play groups are where all the dogs, that are not dog aggressive, get together and play. it's an hour long and plenty to tire them out so they do nothing but sleep while in their kennel! Personal play is one on one play time with a employee and the dog. Tender care time is spending time in the kennel with the dog, petting them, loving on them, making them feel at home.

When you do find a place you like, make him a vacation bag! we get them all the time. Things to put in it is a blanket, toys, treats, and a shirt of yours (one that you have wore and haven't washed yet) the shirt part might sound weird but it's so he can have something that smells like you. It will help him feel better being in a strange new place if he has some of his things with him!

hope this helps, let me know if you have anymore questions.

  • Thanks! I went for a tour and wasn't really impressed. I actually started crying during the tour! I'm a psycho but also PMSing :)

I had to talk to the owner because the tour lady was driving me crazy. She said that I can use pee pads and put him in a bigger area than the smaller one the wacko tour lady showed me. I asked if I could pay extra for some one on one and she assured me that since he is so little the workers would prob pay alot of attention to him and I didn't need to pay.

I freaked out because  they are by themselves at night from 9 till 5 or so. Yes I have issues! Plus they don't have an inside area to play. I don't like that he will be outside all the time. He is such a little spoiled peanut! She did say wear a shirt and let him have it as you stated. Going to check out Camp Bow Bow tomorrow.

    I'm being silly....I know

  • Definitely look at Yelp reviews for the places you look at to see how others liked the resorts. Ask your vet to see if they have any referrals. We usually take our dog to a woman's house who watches her and lets our dog sleep in her bed. (which we don't do at home) See if maybe you can find a house sitter that either comes to your house or you can bring your dog to. Its more personable than the larger resorts. I use camp bow wow all the time for day care and used them once for a 6 night stay. Our dog came home exhausted and slept the next 2 days. The only thing with Camp bow wow is they usually leave at 6pm and don't come back until 6-7 the next morning. Which was fine since I am sure our dog slept the whole time since she didn't get any naps during the day (which you can request) When I drop her off at both the house sitter and camp bow wow she doesn't even look back at me.
  • I have worked at a Camp Bow Wow near me in CO and that is honestly the only place I have trusted to leave my 3 girls at. You get the most play time for your money out of any boarding facility I have heard of. I don't know how the schedule at the one by you is but here is how everything goes at ours here. The workers get there at 6:30 am dogs go out to potty and get fed. Up in their kennels so they digest until 8:30 and out to play until 11:30. They go up for lunch/nap if they are boarding or requested a nap/lunch for them. They go back out at 1 pm till 4 pm. They go up for dinner from 4 pm to 5:30 pm and then back out until 6:30 pm for their last potty. Honestly after all that play time they go in their kennels and crash. When the workers are cleaning and doing last chores the dogs are just passed out no matter how many times they walk past them or how much noise they are making. It's nice, I have 2 huskies and a lab and they are always worn out from being there. And you can bring whatever you think the dog would be comfortable with, bed, blanket, toys, treats, bones and it's food. Just make sure to ask lots of questions about what they do and what their schedule is like daily every place you go. Ours also had webcams that you could watch on the computer of the play yards. Good luck!
