Painting Trim

Our whole house has this fake wood trim - plasticy looking in a orange-brown color.  We have fake wood doors too.  We will eventually replace the doors with white but I would like to start painting the trim.  Any tips?  What kind of paint have you used?

Re: Painting Trim

  • I have zero experience with this sort of project. But, if you know the material the trim is made up of, you can probably research online the correct/best type of paint to use.

For trim, I'm guessing a paint with a high gloss of some sort will provide a lasting appearance and lots of durability.

  • That trim is going to be really, really hard to paint properly.  The paint will scratch and chip really easily.

You'll want to sand the plastic down with sandpaper, and then wipe it down with a lint free cloth.  and you'll need a really, really good primer.  I might suggest using an enamel or oil base paint.
