Black thumb here...when is the best time to split hostas? Thanks!
Re: When to split hostas?
Note: the word "HARDY" refers only to cold tolerance. Nothing else! It has nothing to do with how "tough" a plant is, or how tolerant of poor soil conditions. If it can survive winter in your area, it is HARDY.
You can divide hostas anytime, because they're tough plants to kill.
The best time, or usual time, to do it is in fall when the foliage begins to die back. That way, when they grow new foliage in spring, it will be full and well-shaped. If you divide them after they flush out, they'll be leggy-looking or lopsided that first season.
