Thanks to the new/old format....

This place seems to have reeeeeally taken a dive. None of the usual posters are here and that means little is being said. I know other people exist on these boards so PLEASE speak up!
I'll start. Would you prefer a general post:

How was everyone's weekend? Any big plans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend?

Or, if you'd like, you can respond to this:
What was it like buying your first house? How many of you actually own your own house and what helped you know it was time to take on such a responsibility?

Re: Thanks to the new/old format....

  • Weekend was good-nothing too exciting and DH is away this week and won't be back until next Sunday so I don't know what the plan is for next weekend.

We've owned our house for 3 years now. The process was fun but also a little stressful. Going in and looking at around 30 house was kind of fun but also a little scary seeing what was in our price range. We found the house we really wanted but since we did an FHA loan we ran into a couple issues getting the house (house has a well but the town does have sewage so they originally wanted us to hook up to it). When it came time to buy, the interest rates were down, we had secure jobs and felt we were ready to take that step.

Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • Sorry you're without DH this week but at the same time I also know what it is like so I am comfortable also saying: enjoy your week! haha

Buying a house sounds SUPER scary. I get so nervous with paperwork and contracts. DH is military so buying a house comes with some extra considerations for us- knowing we won't be in that location long enough to pay off the mortgage (unless we put all of one salary to the payments...then maybe!)

Congrats on being house owners! I feel like next to becoming parents that is like the newlyweds big accomplishment (not sure how long you've been married, of course)! And hopefully it happens prior to the becoming parents thing : )

  • Weekend was going fine then ds had allergic reaction to eggs (he's months old).  No big plans yet for Memorial Day weekend.

It was nerve racking buying my first house.  I have a mortgage lol will own it in another 14 years.  Knowing we had an emergency fund and being on a budge.  We also were the builders so we saved a lot of money and did a lot of work ourselves.

  • Oh my goodness I hope your son is ok! Is this the first time he's had eggs or is it now just the last time?

That is neat you built your own house! I bet it has exactly what you want in it!

My weekend with DH was great!  We kinda just hung out, but the greatest part of the weekend was that he cooked me dinner tonight.  It was delicious!!!  Neither one of us cooks a legit dinner that often, but tonight's dinner is officially my favorite meal.

As far as the house situation goes, we currently are renters right now.  However, we're planning on buying a house in a few months, so hopefully that will go well.  We've been renters for a for a few years and we are so ready to own our own home!

Speaking of the new/old format really screwing with things, what the heck happened to the entertainment and money matters boards?  I used to lurk and post there, but whenever I click on the link to go there, it does not take me to any board.  Bummer.

I don't know. I usually don't find myself on those boards but I clicked them both just now and they both took me to what looked like the right page. Try it again?

  • We had a busy weekend. Saturday we went to a lake with DH and my inlaws. Sunday we had a lazy morning and in the afternoon DH and I went to go see Avengers while my mom babysat the girls. It was nice to have a little date.

We've been in our house for 3 yrs. The process was a little stressful but fun. With this new baby though we are outgrowing the house as its only three bedrooms. I do love it though but we may need to think about moving in the next 1-2 years.

Really?  It's still not working for me.  I guess I'm the only one having problems with those boards.

  • My weekend flew by. We are refinishing the hardwood floors in my house so much of my weekend was spent on that project. This coming weekend DH and I will be camping with a big group of friends and then on Memorial day I plan on de-cluttering our spare room/office so I can paint it in preparation for finishing the hardwood floors under the current carpet in that room.

We bought our home about 2.5 years ago after we had rented it for about 6 months. Our landlord was going to be moving and was looking to sell it so we decided that we liked it well enough and it could be a good starter home for us and our dog.  Our mortgage payment was actually less than our rent so that helped and my father gave us our downpayment (absolutely not ideal for most people since I REALLY hated taking that money but my parents wanted to do it and considered it a smart investment on their behalf). In December we will find out if we will be relocating to another state in 2014/2015 so we can begin to really consider more small improvements to increase the value and selling price.

  • It was a hot weekend in Chicago so we laid low on Friday night. Saturday went to a friends for a grill out and a fire pit, so much fun. Sunday went out to brunch with the IL's, grocery shopped, and laundry.

Nothing planned for Memorial Day yet. I'm sure a grill out somewhere.

  • I've lurked occasionally but haven't posted on this board until now.

My weekend was great.  We had really nice weather on Saturday so I took my little girl to the farmers market and then potted several tomato, pepper, and herb plants.  Sunday involved my BIL's graduation from law school...the most exciting part of that was the party afterwards Beer...and some general cleaning.  I know I know...you all are beside yourselves with joy that I've come out of lurking because I'm just so darn exciting!

Memorial weekend - planning a family BBQ and lots of relaxing.

House - DH and I own a house and have done a lot of work on it ourselves.  Sadly its not big enough to comfortably grow into if we have more kids, but with the housing marking sucking it up right now I'm not sure that we'll be able to sell any time soon.  Honestly, I wish we were still renting and would be in position to buy a house that we could stay in for 20 years or more.

  • This weekend was exciting due to the fact we finally bought the PS3 we all have been wanting for a long time, plus 5 new games for it.  My wallet is crying, but the family is happy.

As far as plans for this MDW, I plan on taking Friday off work, which is really good because the proverbial stuff is going to hit the proverbial fan here at work.

Not sure what we will do yet this weekend, but I am looking forward to relaxing.

I had similar issues, but clearing out my temp files took care of it

It is nice to see a tiny little community growing over here even though The Nest keeps sending out trojan viruses or being closed for maintenance. Plus all the regulars (and most of the regular lurkers) decamped to http://pandce.proboards.com/index.cgi

    Stick with it, stalwarts!

Edit: ffs, even this post went buggy. I'm out for the day.

  • So far I haven't had any issues w/the boards and I have been lurking daily & posting on some... (crossing my fingers, anyway).

Well, to be honest Sonrisa it feels a bit less judgmental and intimidating without so many people around.

Hi! I'm Julie. I'm a teacher and lately things are starting to wind down work-wise, plus I am done w/ grad classes for the semester so I have more time to lurk and post on the boards. I used to be on TK a lot before marriage so hoping to find a community here!

My weekend mostly sucked b/c hubby and I were both stressed out, plus have been having sex issues which makes it more stressful. BUT luckily today was much better and I think our fights over the weekend got a lot resolved. The only plans I have this weekend are re-doing our deck w/the BEHR all-in-one cleaner and then a stain.

EDIT: P.S. I am much more interesting than that intro sounded, lame lol!

Hi Julie. Welcome! I've only been on TN for about a month so I'm pretty new, too.
I am about to graduate grad school in two weeks so I definitely know what it feels like to be finished with classes (if only for the summer). In 3.5 weeks I will join H in MS and then about two months after that we will move to VA (he is active duty AF)- so lots of changes coming about on my end!

Sorry to hear you had a rough weekend but I'm glad to hear it is looking up for you!

  • This weekend was crap. I had Sat off and it rained/was cloudy. Worked Sunday 1-midnight, beautiful day. Had today off and it was nice until just after lunch, then it rained.

We did get some work done in the garage though so that was good. I have been working so many weekends, I just want 2 days in a row with my guy and kid.

I am sticking it out here, I think the regulars will trickle back... hope so at least.

Great!  As I said, if it is working for you stick with it :-)

  • I'm a little late to the game on this post, but I'll join...I like the new feel of this board.  It's so difficult to get involved when a board is as established as this one was.  I just didn't feel like I could break in.  I'd like to find a new place to post though, so I'll try this on for size.

I'm Jen, a social studies teacher, married since July 2010.  Nice to meet you! :-)

    Hi Jen!

Glad to hear you like the new feel. I agree with you- it feels easier to speak up. I  spoke up before the switch but I wasn't always comfortable with it and now I feel a lot more free to ask questions!

My husband and I have been married since only last October and in two weeks I will graduate from Grad school with my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling- Yay!
    What grade do you teach?

  • Congratulations!

I teach middle and high school.  Going from subbing to looking for a full time job right now...market's not so good unfortunately.  But I'm sure I'll vent about this in the near future! :-)
