Hi ladies!

I've heard great things about the people on this board. I'm currently engaged to be married - and the date is fast approaching. My fiance is a UK citizen, and I am a US citizen. I will be moving to the UK to live with him after we get married.

Has anyone done this? I know that once we are married and I have the official marriage certificate I can apply for the spousal visa.

But - I want to change my name once we are married. When/how do I go about doing this? Do I apply for the visa with my new married name? How long does the visa process take? When should I change my name on my passport?

Any insight on this would be very helpful. Thanks.

Re: Hi ladies!

  • There are several of us on here who have done this. You will have to apply for the visa from the US, and it can take several weeks, so you will likely be apart from your husband. You can do your name change as soon as you have your marriage certificate, I would apply after that for the visa. But, saying that, my visa was in my passport with my maiden name for 3 years, and I had changed my name in that time. You just have to make sure that you book travel in whatever name your passport is in.

  • Okay - so your suggestion is to do the name change first, then apply for the visa? I want to spend as little time as possible apart from FI after the wedding.
  • You can enter the UK for six months on a tourist visa.

You don't want to enter the UK on a tourist visa. First, the 6 months is up to the discretion of the Immigration officer, and if you come in married to a Brit who lives in the UK you run a HUGE risk of being sent back. Second, you can't apply for your marriage visa from within the UK, so even if you got in on a 6 month visa you would have to fly back to the US and apply there (and you couldn't work in the UK or get benefits like the NHS), and spend the time apart. I would change your name and then apply, and just know you WILL have to spend time apart.

I would also suggest doing the name change first and then applying. Basically not to be harsh but truthful I'm gonna say get used to spending time apart, just hope that it isn't as long as I had to. Good luck and congrats though! I also am a US cit married to a UK and currently living in England.

Also, as far as entering on a 6 month visa...I did twice while already married, the first time I was able to stay the second not. It depends on who you get I guess. But again, Good luck!

  • If you are applying straight for a marriage visa this is all true. Are you getting married in the US or UK?

If you're getting married in the UK, you need a fiance visa first but then you can apply for your marriage visa whilst you are in the UK.

Or if you're getting married in the US, I think you can go to one of the consulates and apply in person after you have your marriage certificate?

It sounds like she is getting married in the US. And you can no longer go in person and get your visa, they stopped that a few years ago.
