Used Mattress

My MIL is moving out of state and has offered us her California King sized bed. We currently have a queen, and I'm not sure if we should take the Cali King or not. DH has said the mattress is likely more than 10 years old, but I'm not sure how long they stay good for. Our bedroom is pretty small, about 12'x14', but the bed would fit and DH is very tall so I'm sure he'd appreciate the extra space. Also, the Cali King has no headboard and we wouldn't be able to purchase one for awhile... or probably ever, because we really don't have a budget for decorative items.

Should we go for it anyway? It's just hard to pass up a free upgrade... Although we would need to purchase new bedding, and I'm just not sure how long a mattress stays good for. I guess we could always keep our queen bed in storage until we need it again.

Any thoughts?

Eh, used mattresses kind of skeeve me out, whether from family or not.  Would you be able to afford a new mattress cover and all new bedding for the bigger size since your existing linens won't fit?  If not, then I'd pass on it.
  • Depends on the mattress as to how long it'll last.  We have a 40 year old Serta in our guest room that was my mom's in her first apartment.  Guests say they sleep really well.  But you read all the time about mattresses, even expensive ones from good companies, that are done in just 2-3 years.

Cal King sheets are hard to come by and expensive.  For a comforter, you can just use a regular king, but expect to pay $80 or more.

Personally, I probably wouldn't take it.

  • The idea of sleeping full time on the mattress that my in-laws did, not to mention doing other things, gives me the heebie-jeebies.
  • Lol, I guess I should mention our current bed was my parents... I've never owned a non-hand-me-down bed. With a college budget we can't really be too picky. :)

    No... I wouldn't take it.

    I just think it's gross.

And it's hard to find Cal. King sheets and whatnot.

  • For intamacy, keep the queen. We have a King because our 4 yo sleeps with us most of the time and even when he's not in bed with us, we sleep so far apart, I kind of miss snuggling in the queen. We still could of course, its just that we really don't and I've heard this from a lot of people.
  • Besides of having uncomfortable feelings using a used mattress have in mind the new problem of bedbugs. The idea of getting a FREE mattress might turn out to be night mare!!!! My friend tried it and believe you me she will never ever do this again in her life!!!
  • There is no harm in giving it a try. You can take it and if it fits good in your bedroom you can have it permanently but if not you can put it in storage. And as you have said that the mattress is about 10 years old, I do not think it will be too bad to use is the mattress is of good quality and had been used with a mattress protector.
