Help! Using formal dining room as a second living area?

I am building a new house that has a formal dining room right right as you walk in the front door, and then as you walk further in you enter the smallish living room and the kitchen/breakfast area.  I like to have company over quite a bit and was thinking of using the dining room instead as a second living area, but have no idea how to lay out the space, what furniture to use, etc.  Any ideas (or photos of your existing space) would be greatly appreciated!

 TIA!

Re: Help! Using formal dining room as a second living area?

  • We did this in our house as well. We had two living areas, but we made the 2nd living area an office so we still have a guest room (our house is 3br) and two living areas, because we honestly never used the formal dining area. We have a sofa and a recliner in there, with end tables. I hope that helps a little.
