So, my husband and I have been renters, mainly because I've been a full time student for the last 7 years. We decided it was time to buy a house in a town we love before the prices jump up.
We fell in love with a home that is quite a bit larger than the house we live now. We are going from a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom townhouse (with one large principle room, and a kitchen) to a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom detached house (with a living room, dining room, kitchen, family room and 3-season room).
We close July 30th, and we don't have to be out of our rental until the end of August, so we have time to make changes.
My question....where do I start!? Any advice would be great....
Re: Bought a house...now onto decorating!
Wow, this is so exciting since you have a blank slate.
Personally, I like to select inspirational objects - a piece of artwork, vase, found object, rug or pillow that I adore and build my decor off of that.
For example, I have a collection of green glass items and I've decided in our new home to go very neutral and use this collection with other greens as accents. In our previous home, my inspration was an area rug that had blue, green, orange and white in it.
Since the kitchen is the center of my home, I begin there and branch off from it. How you decorate your kitchen will filter through to the rest of the house. At least that's how I do it.
Another idea I use is to sign up for magazines from PotteryBarn, West Elm, Crate and Barrel, etc.and cut pics out that I like. Pinterest can be good for this as well, but I'm old school
I also do a few runs aorund the grocery store magazine rack each year and grab a few decorating or lighting ones for ideas that I cut out and tape into a binder.
The biggest mistake people make in decorating is finding paint first and then trying to match around it. Instead, go with your inspiration and build the paint choices from that.
You might want to decide in advance what order you want to do things in. DH and I move often for work, and I always do the public rooms first. I want to be able to open the door and have a neighbor come in without making apologies, and I need to come home from work to a pretty space. The bedroom isn't important to me bc I'm only in there awake for an hour or two a day. But other people reverse this thinking bc their bedroom is their retreat. Either way, I think deciding this is a good place to start. I also work to finish one room at a time - I cannot stand to have undone tasks in every room in the house.
After that, find your inspiration and dive in. Houzz.com is my preferred source.
