So we got the dog I posted about a while back. (Before the Nest ate my post.) Does anyone know how we can get him in the crate tonight? We've tried it slowly and without forcing him, but he prefers to sleep on the tile in front of our front door. We aren't comfortable leaving him loose while we sleep, so what can we do? I think we could block off the entryway using the crate so that he's either on tile or on the crate. Does that sound like an ok idea? We rent, so we have to worry about the carpet.
Re: New dog and his crate
We use treats to get him into the crate. It works except at bed time. Little bastard knows the difference in us leaving and us going to bed. He HATES going in the crate if we are at home. When we leave for work? He's fine. Now he just sleeps with us, which we are okay with, so it's all good.
Arnyway. We do have an adjustable gate/pen that works really well. It has 8 sides and end-to-end is about 16 feet? We can adjust it to any size to cage him in an area. It's been a lifesaver. The crate is better, but if you want to contain him to a certain area minus the crate I suggest the pen.
I have an english bulldog, so they are not jumpers. If yours is a jumper it might not work as well.
Go ahead and put him in the kennel....it will ultimately become his sanctuary. Remember, you make the rules by which he will live...teach him from the very start that that is his place to sleep and his comfort zone for when you are away....
If you need an incentive, a treat put into the kennel so he has to walk in to get it, then close the door and it is done. Then go to bed and get some sleep....
We put our dog in her crate since we got her anytime we left and to sleep. We did the treat thing and now she automatically goes in whenever we get the treats by her crate. We also rent and blocked off the carpeted areas with baby gates. She loves her crate. Your dog may also like the coolness of the tile.
When I introduced my dog to her crate, I used to give her a kong. I would stuff it with wet dog food and put it in the freezer, so it would keep her busy for quite a while. She wouldn't even notice when we left.
I'm not sure where you are keeping the crate right now, but dogs will often have a harder time adjusting if they feel isolated. It is a good idea to keep it in a common area of the house where he spends a lot of his time. Also, you could try keeping it in your bedroom at night ... he might feel more comfortable if he is in the room with you.
His crate is in the living room. We read about not isolating him.
However, he will not be sleeping in our room. That is our space. He has some boundary issues, and he has some problems with respecting my personal space. I need to have space where he is not allowed.
