Show me your mantle

I am now the proud owner of my first mantle and I need help decorating it. I would love to see or hear about yours.

Re: Show me your mantle

  • Welcome to the nest :)  Sorry to say that there have been some glitches here lately and many people have decamped for these boards, but I think people are trickling back: http://pandce.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=homegarden

Maybe the easiest way to go about it is to go to houzz.com and look at living rooms - many/most of them will have mantels you can check out.

The basic formula is a painting or mirror in the center on the wall and stuff on the sides.  If you make your arrangement symmetrical, that's considered a more formal or traditional look.  If you do things off-balance, it's considered a more modern look.  (I don't necessarily buy that, since I think the items you work with can determine how formal or modern it looks.)

My one big piece of advice to you is to watch scale.  When you're looking at pics, you'll notice that the pros never use dinky little items - they use BIG items.  That's really important.  Don't clutter a mantel up with 4x6 photos or little figurines - get big vases or other items like you see at TJ Maxx, etc.

  • I'm not entirely happy with mine, but here it is:
