How to landscape a very rocky yard?
Our back yard is drowning in river rocks. Our neighbors said the previous owner tried to clear them out but it turned out to be an impossible task. WWYD? All that's there is dirt, rocks and patches of weeds.
Re: How to landscape a very rocky yard?
What do you mean by "river rocks"? I'm picturing a house built in a dry creek bed.
Is it rock shale, as in you live in a mountainous region?
Yes, a picture would be very helpful.
Was the rock brought in or is it "native"?
There's a lot of naturally occurring rock in my area. It makes gardening a real pain. You can either dig them out, one by one, and build small walls to border your beds or you can build raised beds with landscape timbers and fill them with soil. The latter might be the easiest way to go, although you'll still be digging out some rock to provide and even base for the timbers. Or you can plant the whole yard as a rock garden, with creeping plants between the rocks.
If you need to plant a tree or large bush, or possibly even a small bush, be prepared for some difficult digging.
