Electric lawn mower?

Would it be weird to get a cordless lawn mower?  They cost a little more but I'm so tired of messing with gas and oil and they flip on with a switch.

Does anyone have one they would recommend?

A little more? IMO they cost a LOT more, but no matter. Cordless electric mowers are good for small lawns. For larger ones, you can buy a plug-in electric and an extension cord much cheaper.

  • How big is your yard? At our old house (5,000sf lot) we had an electric lawn mower that we had to plug in. When we moved to our current house (8,800 sf lot) we knew the cord wouldn't work so we got a cordless electric lawn mower. I think we had it for less than a year before we caved and got a gas mower.

First, it was HEAVY and we didn't get a self propelled mower because it greatly added to the cost. Second it wasn't very powerful. If we weren't on top of the mowing and let the grass get just a little too long the mower couldn't handle it. When this would happen we'd have to go over the yard twice. And third, we often couldn't do our entire yard on one charge. It was a pain to do half of it, charge it overnight, and do the other half the next day.

So for me it would really depend on how bit your lot is.

  • At our previous home, which was a reasonably large lot, we used a rechargeable mower and I  loved it!  So much quieter and less smelly than a gas motor, and it started easily.  I could usually do the entire yard in one charge, but if the grass was wet, part of the yard might have to wait for the next day.  That was ten years ago, and rechargeable mowers are probably much more advanced now.
  • Our yard isn't very big...maybe 0.25 of an acre.  My husband usually mows but once in awhile I try to do it.  Just the thought of not messing with gas and the pull cord seemed like a nice idea.  And the fact that it's quieter.

We bought the rechargeable, cordless electric mower. I think it was about $350. It was a splurge, yes, but my husband LOVES it and enjoys mowing now. With our old (gas) mower, it wouldn't start about half the time and we were forever cleaning this part and that part trying to get it to work. (It was old and handed down from family members, so I have no idea how well-maintained it had been before). I know that's not the case with all gas mowers, but it soured us so much that it made the cost of the one we got worth it.

  • We just got a cordless electric mower and my DH loves it!  It's self-propelled, so weight isn't an issue.  We have about 0.27 acre, but of course the house sits on some of that.  Like a PP said, if the grass is wet or really long, it sometimes takes 2 charges to get it all done.  But it's nice not having to deal with gas or oil.
