Induction
is set up for Sunday. I go in at 8 am. However, I had my first
internal today & my cervix was soft, but not dilated, so they want
to start me with Misoprostol (Cytotec) on Sunday. My bff was highly
advised against it by her aunt (a high-risk l&d nurse) because it's not FDA approved for induction - it's actually made for ulcer treatment so now I'm
worried about them using that. She told me to ask for cervidil instead.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I'm pretty
convinced I'm going to end up with a c-section seeing as though my body
is clearly not ready for labor yet, but we'll see!

My Blog
I was actually just reading about cytotec yesterday, and I would also advise against it. There is a pretty big risk of placental abruption (sp?) among other things including emergency hysterectomy... mind you, what I was reading was also from the early thousands when cytotec was relatively new.
I had cervadil to start out my labor with Wyatt and it caused for my uterus to hyper-stimulate (which is where the risk of abruption comes in), the nice thing about cervadil is that it is a tampon and can be taken out, and the prostoglandin gel that they often use as a second step can be wiped away. The problem with Cytotec is that it is a pill and is difficult to remove after it has dissolved if problems do arise.
Even though my labor didn't really go anywhere on the cervadil, I would recommend asking your doctor about using it instead. The contractions on cervadil really aren't that bad (even when they were double peaking they weren't so bad that I felt I needed relief), and if it can help to dilate you, it can greatly reduce the amount of pitocin needed (if you end up needing it).
I was induced with a foley balloon which isn't medicinal at all. It is a catheter ther put through you cervix at the end there is a balloon that the fill once it's in that sits on your cervix to dialate it. It was not fun at all but it dialated me to five centimeters overnight and started my labor without contractions.
Good luck!
I meant labor without pitocin lol
My doctor always use cervadil first and if they need to they will go to cytotec as a last option.
I went in for cervadil on a Monday night and it was placed around 8pm. I woke up at 6 the next morning and I wasn't changed at all. They nurses and my doctor said they have never had a patient that it didn't work for. I ended up going home Tuesday because with the understanding that I would try again on Friday night. My water ended up breaking naturally Friday at 2am. I'm like in the 1% of people that it didn't work for, then again boys are usually more stubborn!
I would definitely call your doctor and talk about your concerns and see what they say. Usually with these types of induction drugs they have you come at night so it can be placed and you can get a little sleep because it can take a while to get going.
HA! I was just thinking..WOW..I'm all about that then! lol
I don't! Thanks!! I will keep you updated!!
