2nd Birthday party menu - critques welcomed!

DD's 2nd birthday party will be in July, and it's bee themed (M's 2nd Bee-Day Bee Bee Q"

The main entree will be pulled pork from our local BBQ place, and I need to come up with the rest of the menu.

I know burgers and hotdogs would fit the theme, but DH isn't sold on the idea of manning the grill all day and missing the party.

What else would you serve as an entree?  I was thinking Chik Fil A nuggets.

Also, should I have something separate or additional for the kids?  DD is pretty picky, but will always eat fruit, so I will definitely have a fruit salad on hand.

In addition to what I mentioned above, here are some other items I was considering:

Veggies and dip

"Taters" (french fries from the same BBQ place) or baked beans (which would be better ?)

Something else?  Pasta salad?

TIA for any input!

Re: 2nd Birthday party menu - critques welcomed!

  • No need to make this complicated - just do a regular BBQ menu :)  CFA nuggets are a good addition I think.  For sides, what about beans, fries, and coleslaw?  If not coleslaw, then definitely something cool and creamy (pasta salad, etc).  You definitely need more than 1 side.
  • Agreed with Tarheels.  I'd do the pulled pork, beans. fries, coleslaw and fruit salad.  Coleslaw is a must in my book because I love it dumped on my sandwich.  I'm not sure you need the nuggets but they seem to be a common addition for people.

Another thought might be to do mac and cheese instead of the beans or fries.  It would be kid friendly and could double as a main dish and you could get rid of the nuggets too.

  • simple is better :)  I would stick to the BBQ theme like mentioned above... chips could be an easier side than french fries even!  Hot dogs for the kids are a good idea if they wont eat BBQ, wont take long on the grill and are cheap!
  • How many kids will be there, and how old will they be?

Because I don't know any 2 year olds who will eat pulled pork.  If you're going to have a lot of small children, I'd definitely look into a more child-friendly option.  Chicken nuggets are good, and I'd go with taters over baked beans (less messy for the little ones).
