XP: 2nd birthday party menu, critques welcomed!

DD's 2nd birthday party will be in July, and it's bee themed (M's 2nd Bee-Day Bee Bee Q"

The main entree will be pulled pork from our local BBQ place, and I need to come up with the rest of the menu.

I know burgers and hotdogs would fit the theme, but DH isn't sold on the idea of manning the grill all day and missing the party.

What else would you serve as an entree?  I was thinking Chik Fil A nuggets.

Also, should I have something separate or additional for the kids?  DD is pretty picky, but will always eat fruit, so I will definitely have a fruit salad on hand.

In addition to what I mentioned above, here are some other items I was considering:

Veggies and dip

"Taters" (french fries from the same BBQ place) or baked beans (which would be better ?)

Something else?  Pasta salad?

TIA for any input!

  • You could make the hot dogs ahead of time and keep them warm in a crockpot or roaster.  We did that for my son's last birthday party and it worked out just fine.

Either the nuggets or the hot dogs would probably satisfy most kids.  I think you'd be safe with either one.

I always enjoy hot sides versus cold ones personally, so I would enjoy the baked beans and the fries.  Fruit salad is a nice touch to balance the heavy meal.  This one was really good.  I made it for a birthday party and adults and kids gobbled it up.

    Have fun!!!

  • I think the pulled pork is plenty, but if you really feel like you need something a little more kid friendly then I would do hot dogs.  You don't even have to grill them if DH didn't feel like it.  As for the sides I think fries would get soggy and/or stale too easily so I would opt for the baked beans and maybe do a cole slaw along with the fruit salad.  Sounds Yummy to me!

  • Well you can precook,e ven grill a ton of hotdogs and just put them in a sterno chafing pan similar to what I imagine the bbq place is going to give you...so there are 2 mains. Nugget platters are expensive and you have to buy a lot because people gobble them up (and it doesn't fit them theme)

    I would do baked beans

    Fruit Salad

Pasta Salad or Macoroni and cheese

    Green beans or green salad

    Veggies/Dip and Cheese/Crackers for appetizers

    Cookies, Brownies, Cake for dessert

    Iced Tea and Lemonade

  • Lurker but I saw this on crockpot365's blog.  I haven't tried it but it seems simple.

  • You can always do something in a crockpot like hotdogs/sausage as PP's have suggested.

As for sides I would do:

    Tossed salad

    Veggie Tray

    Pasta Salad

    Baked Beans

    Macaroni Salad

    Potato Salad

Any of those would go great.
