Packing early?

DH and I are building a house (as everyone probably knows from previous posts) and it should be done in August.  We have a huge stack of boxes in our upstairs loft, and everyone keeps telling us to go ahead and start packing nonessentials (winter clothes, Christmas decorations, etc.) so that we have less to do later.  But it seems silly to pack 3 months in advance, not to mention I'm a procrastinator, lol.  Would you start packing yet?

Re: Packing early?

  • Winter clothes/Christmas decorations? Yes. I love summer and being lazy in the nice sun and would rather do it sooner than last minute (and if/when I buy my own house I would love love love to move in asap!)

As far as normal clothes... I'd leave those on hangers and transport them that way (day-of, or whatever).

  • Absolutely. Trust me, you'll be bogged down with a ton of stuff at the last minute. Take time now to purge, organize and pack what you won't need for now. You will thank yourself later. You don't have to go crazy, but spend a couple hours a weekend doing it or something.

  • Well, we packed the Christmas decorations / old wedding stuff / junk storage closet today, haha.  Got some trash, some donations, and some ready-to-move boxes.  Not sure what area we'll tackle next, but it feels good to have one area done!

  • I agree, you should start now. Get a PODS or storage unit. (or designate a corner of your garage, basement or a room you seldom use). Check out FlyLady.net. She has changed my life. Cozi.com can propbably help with packing ideas too. I love lists and FlyLady and Cozi helped my organize my married life. Hope this helps and keeps you as stress-free as possible!
  • I definitely agree. pack non essentials now.  Otherwise you'll be struggling to get it all done at the end.
