Trying to see if anyone has a suggestion - cleaning solution

Hi Everyone!  I've never posted here and haven't been on in forever.  I'm trying to be much more green in my life but I'm still a novice when it comes to this stuff. I have a LO who is getting to be a very mobile little girl, and it has just made me realize how much I need to clean and get things organized around our home.  So this may be a bit random but hoping someone has had some experience! One thing I want to do is buy a carpet cleaner.  I'm looking at a Bissel Proheat Upright Deep Cleaner if it matters.  Do any of you have deep cleaners?  Is there a cleaning solution that is safe for a LO on the move?  I just hear a lot of them leave residues behind, no matter how hard you try, so I just want to be sure that whatever is left around won't be harmful to her. I tried to check out something from a company like Seventh Generation but I'm just not finding anything.Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Trying to see if anyone has a suggestion - cleaning solution

  • I started using plain white vinegar in mine. I think mine is a Hoover upright. I used the solutions for them, but I always went back over with plain water after just because I didn't like the film it would leave behind. Vinegar works perfectly! The lid for my tank has 2 lines for measuring out solution, and I would just go by that to measure out the vinegar. I will warn you though, when I did it, it literally smelled like I was boiling pickles. But that quickly went away (like before the carpets were even close to dry) and once it was dry, my carpets had not been that fresh since they were put in. HTH!

  • Thank you so much!  I ended up buying the Bissell Proheat and was thinking about going the vinegar route before I saw this (and after much googling).  I had also seen suggestions of how amazing just plain water can be, too, so wanted to try that first.  It did an AWESOME job!  When the tough stains hit, I'll give the vinegar a try.  Thanks for the suggestion and letting me know the smell goes away quickly; that would've scared me!
  • I just used my Bissell Proheat this weekend, and agree on the cleaning solution, I'll probably just use plain water after sprinkling baking soda on the carpet from now on. My carpets feel "stiff" and a bit scratchy, but they've never looked or smelled cleaner!
