Formica counter tops question
Anyone have Formica counter tops with a shiny finish? Does it look like marble but you can tell its not when you touch it? Does the shiny surface show and allow scratches easily? Does it look cheap? Dh and I are looking to replace ours but can't afford marble or anything fancy. We've found a Formica we like but it has a shiny finish and we wonder how this will look and hold up. Tia
Re: Formica counter tops question
Do you mean the old fashioned shiny? Yep, they're generally pretty obvious.
We have the Formica FX Radiance. It's fooled people who aren't into D&R. Here's a pic of it in my kitchen.
Formica generally produces most patterns in a couple finishes - check the website to see how it's available.

Mine is Formica Mineral Jet in the radiance! Here and here and here are more pics.
Old school shiny is just a plain gloss with no texture. Those are the ones that are really obvious - the kind that were put in 1950s kitchens. The new ones with texture are convincing.
No, there's no maintenance. I can't speak to scratches since I don't cut on my counters (I always use a cutting board). Overall, they look just like they did when they were installed 2 years ago.

The gloss surface is apt to scratching-even if you don't cut directly on it...i.e. scuffing from sliding pots, bowls, small appliances across the surface.
As previous posters have mentioned, the FX180 laminates are FANTASTIC! They have a bit of texture and the color patterns are based on real slabs of granite and marble.
