Need advice on staining dresser...
I'm wrapping up a several weeks long project and need a little help. I've been refinishing a dresser to use in our nursery as a changing table, and can't decide what type of clear coat to use on the top. I'm applying it over a gel stain, FWIW, and need it to be durable and scratch/water resistant. Spraying isn't an option so I need something that will coat evenly and level well if hand-rubbed or brushed. Ideas?

Re: Need advice on staining dresser...
Any clear satin, semi-gloss or gloss oil-based polyurethane from a local hardware store will work fine. I'd expect about 3-4 light coats. I prefer sponge applicators too. You'll need to lightly rub the poly between coats with a steel wool pad. Shellac works essentially the same way. Expect them both to stink pretty good for a couple days. You'll even smell it in your clothes dryer if you have a gas dryer.
Good luck!!
