Are you going to find out the sex of your baby or wait until he/she is born?
Do you guys have names picked out?
TW: We are going to find out, but I still have 5+ weeks to wait! We haven't seriously talked names yet, just tossed some around... I'm betting we'll wait at least until we find out the sex to start talking seriously about it.
Stargirl: I did write him a letter probably over a month ago now (I know the kidney went to a man in Georgia). But I haven't gotten a response back. I heard he was doing well after the transplant (in Dec 2011), and hopefully he is still doing great.
Wow, it takes a really special person to donate an organ to a stranger!
It was nice to learn more about you, Elisabeth.
I loved David the Gnome as a kid too. We watched it after school.
Where in NJ is your brother?
Another David the Gnome fan here! Awesome that you donated an organ to a stranger.
Thanks for sharing!
I have never heard of David the Gnome.
You're going to have to share more about the kidney donation! Er... you know, if you want to.
I'm fascinated.
GRSP: Well... it just hit me one day when I was in college... I have 2 kidneys but only need one, I wish I could give my extra one away to someone who needs it. But I have never known anyone who needed one, there's no history of kidney problems in my family and I didn't know if it was even possible to anonymously give one away.
In May 2011, I volunteered at the GR Kidney Walk, and there was a booth from the Saint Mary's Kidney Transplant program. I asked them if it was possible to give a kidney to a stranger who needs it, they said yes and gave me some information to look over. I thought about it for about a month and called her and said that I wanted to go through the testing. They did a lot of tests to make sure I was healthy enough, and then compatibility testing to find a recipient who would be a good match.
I gave a kidney in December 2011 and it started a chain of kidney donation called a NEAD chain (Never Ending Altruistic Donor chain). I donated a kidney to a man in Georgia, his brother (who was not a match for him) donated to someone else, who has a relative who will donate to someone else and so on. It's like pay-it-forward with kidneys.
If there are any other questions anyone has, I'm more than willing to answer. It's definitely something I'm passionate about, organ donation in general.
Nice to "meet" you Beth!
That is really cool about your kidney donation, what a wonderful gift to a total stranger! I don't know if I could do that - maybe a little selfish thinking but I would be worried about if I were ever to need both. Good for you!!
I was hoping it was a chain! That's awesome!
I've considered doing the same. How does it work out for costs?
The transplant program covers all the testing, the recipient's insurance covers everything related to the transplant.
ETA: If you are considering it, please ask me any questions!! The testing was not that bad, mostly lab draws. My surgery recovery went pretty smoothly too, I was in the hospital 5 days (but I've read where it could be less), and I was away from work for a total of 3 weeks (surgery on 12/12/11, back to work on 1/3/12). My main incision is approx 2.5 inches (vertical with the bottom of it being about an inch above my belly button), 2 small "lap sites" (for instruments, about 2 cm each), and one tiny one (about a cm) for a camera to be able to look around.
