Sweet potato

A customer gave us a sweet potato plant. Not the decorative kind that doesn't produce, but one that we will give us sweet potatoes. This is the first time I've grown a sweet potato plant.

I've been googling but wanted some opinions here.

I am in Iowa, Zone 5. I have black soil, not sand in my garden.  It's already been an unusually warm spring and I am expecting a hot dry summer and late fall. Just my hunch with how things have been looking and my 40 some years living in this state.

So my question is, any advice on how to plant this?  And how much room will it take up?  Any other caregiving tips?

 Thanks!

Re: Sweet potato

  • They are vineing plants, so they might take over.  It is possible to plant them in a container garden.  Till up your soil and make sure its not compacted down.  they like fertilizer as well.
