Dog's eye swollen
Hi Guys,
I need some help. I'm not sure how serious to take this. Tonight I came home around midnight and noticed my lab's right eye was swollen. When I asked DH if he noticed anything he said that her eye was red when he got home around 8 p.m. but wasn't swollen. I examined the eye. She has a bump above her eye in the eyebrow area. It's oozing a clear liquid. It doesn't seem to be bothering her, I've only seen her scratch the eye after I examined it. She hasn't touched it since. She didn't have any problems catching a treat that I tossed her. She hasn't slowed down and is the same spaz. My dog was at the vet over the weekend, and was told she was healthy. Any ideas what this could be? Should I make an emergency appointment or wait a few days and see what happens? TIA

I'd call the vet in the morning and see if he thinks she should be seen. It seems like a simple bug bite, and she wouldn't need to be seen, but I'm not an expert.
I agree with vampirstein from your description it sounds like it will be ok, but eyes are not something to mess with.
Call and talk to your vet and they should be able to recommend coming in or not.

We woke up this morning and her other eye was red and itchy. The eye from last night was completely closed. DH took off work and took her to the vet who saw her right away. Seems she has allergies. She's been given a fast acting benadryl and we're to give her more tonight. DH is staying home with her to monitor the swelling today.
Any reason why? I'm just curious. I think DH took whatever the vet gave him as far as the over the counter stuff goes.
for an acute reaction (which is what it sounds like your pup has) I would stick with benadryl. It works faster and is stronger.
Some people have better luck managing allergies on zyrtec than benadryl, but I haven't had the results with it trying to treat an acute reaction.
Benadryl does nothing for my lab. We have to go with the prescription big guns. My vet has said benadryl is only effective in about 40% of dogs.
Before any action you just need to check weather it is a type of allergy or anything else , you may be able to treat it successfully yourself with an over-the-counter eye wash or eye drops specifically for dogs.
