Gluten free options- best stores?

A friend of mine needs to go gluten-free, it's become very clear her body is intolerant to gluten.  She's a single mom & funds are sometimes limited so I want to give her a gift cert. to a store that has a good amount of gluten free options.  Does somewhere like Trader Joe's have good GF options?  Any other suggestions?

Re: Gluten free options- best stores?

  • My son had to be GF for a couple of years before growing out of his wheat allergy, so we've done a lot of GF shopping.  TJ's does have some, and most health food stores, like Whole Foods, will have good selection.  But, I have noticed that the regular grocery stores and even WalMart (if it has a full grocery section) have a LOT more selection than they used to.

As a side note - after trying about a million kinds of GF pasta, I wholeheartedly recommend Tinkyada brand pasta, which you can buy at WalMart and at all our local grocery stores.  It is the only brand we have found that actually tastes enough like regular pasta that you don't notice you are eating GF.  Unfortunately, I never found bread that I'd say that about.

  • We buy from Trader Joe?s but there?s a lot more variety on Gluten Free Palace ? it?s an online shop. You?ll find Gluten Free Gift Baskets there, too! Your friend might like receiving one of those to initiate her to a gluten-free lifestyle.
