I'm in Zone 4 and looking to create a green fence along the side of my driveway..This area is shady nearly all day from trees overhead. I had planted a couple hemlocks and one is thriving the other I damaged pruning. I want these trees/shrubs to fit the feel of our area, we are out in the country, so I worry that a hedge of arbovitae wll look silly. However, I love the privacy they provide. Our neighbors have decided to purchase a dozen alpaca and I don't want to see them all day. Help!!
Re: so little sun :(
Google "Shade Plants". You'll find numerous gardening sights that recommend various plants, shrubs, hedges, and trees for shady area.
Good luck.
Also, once you find the "green fence", consider planting a variety of hosts to add some dimension. They thrive in the shade....consider asking friends and neighbors if they are ready to split hosts they already have - it'll save some $$$ (I'm sure someone might have already suggested that in another thread).
