Decorating a long narrow living room

We are closing on our house at the end of the month and in the process of looking for new furniture. We would love to get a sectional and a couple of decorative chairs, but I am confused on how to set up the living room. We would prefer to put the tv on the wall to the left, because I would like to be able to decorate the fireplace mantel. Any advice?

Re: Decorating a long narrow living room

  • I wouldn't do a sectional bc you'll only emphasize the long narrowness of the space.  The room's also not that big and you'll box it in.

If you want to put the tv on the long wall, I don't think you can use the bar with bar stools.  Working away from the bar, you'd need room for the stools, for the stools pulled out, a walkway, and then the sofa.  That'd put your sofa in line with the fireplace and first window.  Are you ok with not using the bar?  I don't use mine for eating and only use it for serving at parties.

Get a pair of small chairs and put them on either side of the fireplace and/or where the sellers have the "loveseat" right now.  You might need 2 pairs of chairs.

My trick for arranging furniture in a new space is to get a whole stack of magazines and throw them on the floor to represent the four corners of a piece of furniture.  You'll be able to see where the sofa will go, tv stand, etc, before going shopping.

Lastly, it's really important when you're shopping to get furniture that's smaller in scale than the big overstuffed things that are there now.  The room's average in size, but those big hulking things are sucking up lots of room.

  • It's hard to tell from the picture how long the room is. Is there much room where the person holding the camera is standing? I think you can totally put the TV on that wall.

Think of things in terms of seating areas. Maybe you do more than one area. We have a similar long room and we have a couch/tv area and a dining room area and a chair in front of the fire area. If it's long enough, you may be able to do a sectional. That's what we have in our TV area. Nice space, by the way.

  • The rule of thumb, here, is to place the furniture against the grain of the room.  So, it you room is long and narrow, place the sofa against the perpendicular wall and NOT against the long wall.  This way, you will be creating better proportions for the room instead of making the length even longer.  Actually, a sectional is a good idea, placing the longer side, in your case, opposite the FP.  Ideally, the sofa should be equal in length on both sides.  What you want to do is to square off the space.  AbbyGail Designs would then advise completing the space with a round coffee table, smoothing the circulation around the different pieces.

  • I agree with pp that a sectional isn't going to be the best idea for the room.  I like the idea of a smaller scale couch and a chair or two set up by the fireplace.  I'd personally probably center the couch with the ceiling fan.  It looks off center in the picture, and I have a deeply ingrained need for symmetry, and it would keep me awake at night.

Just take very careful measurments of the furniture you are considering, and try it out in the room, use the magazine idea, or use painters tape to outline the furniture on the floor in the room before you buy it.

    Good luck!
