Heart rate monitor?

Ok, so I recently started running outside and would really like to be able to track my calories.  I use map my run for distance and it estimates calories but when I enter the same info into sparkpeople I get a completely different result so I dont' trust either.  Is there one that I can just plug into my iphone?  or is it better to get a watch?  help!!!

Re: Heart rate monitor?

  • My husband bought an inexpensive Timex heart rate monitor but it claims he burns 1,000 calories on a 2 mile run, which is completely wrong. I have a Garmin GPS watch that came with a heart rate monitor but I've never used it.

Sparkpeople is pretty accurate. You pretty much burn 100-150 calories per mile whether you walk or run it. I'd average calories burned between Sparkpeople and mapmyrun and you'd be pretty close to right on target. Also, I use the mileage tracker on Sparkpeople rather than the activity tracker and that gets the calories just about perfect.

  • I have a polar FT4 and I love it!!! I use it for my training every day.

I have one also and it's awesome. Easy to set up and operate as well, and the chest strap is more comfortable than you would think.
